    Planning for replacement conservatory

The rough weather we’ve just had has emphasised how leaky our existing c. 3.5 by 3.5 Victorian style conservatory is. It’s 30 years old now. I’m thinking in a couple of years we’d like to replace it with triple glazing and a better insulated ‘tile styled’ roof. I believe the base is solid -...

    Quote for roof work

Thanks - rot underneath the UPVC… so with proper inspection it could just be worth completely removing the wood and replacing with upvc in its entirety? I’ve decided to wait until the new year to do any roof work as funds just now don’t allow it for now. I do have a roof cleaning guy who used...

Any point in upgrading glass in existing window frames?

Did you find the corners tricky? And I’ve read you need to start the run at the top of the window where there is less weathering.

Any point in upgrading glass in existing window frames?

I sent a sample of my own and they sent me the best fit - it’s fitted in really tight after I used a little spray of silicone lubricant so I think I’ll order some and try and fit around the whole window

Any point in upgrading glass in existing window frames?

So I received a sample replacement seal which was a little bigger, but went in ok with a small spray of silicone spray… is there anything bad about using silicone spray to help push in seal?

    Leaking waste pipe under toilet

Ok so went a bit mad but the metal support thing was starting to rot due to the leak so I doubt I’ll be refitting any of this. Just want a standard toilet in here. Would need to think of a way to hide the pipe although that’s not essential - wall behind is concrete block

    Leaking waste pipe under toilet

Legend that worked! How would you cap it off here just to be safe? I’m needing to dismantle the whole thing because the leak has made a mess of the floor area

    Leaking waste pipe under toilet

So I’ve gotten down to what I thought was the isolation valve but it’s just a flat screw head that turns round and doesn’t seem to tighten… any ideas?

    Quote for roof work

Got another quote today - £2.6k. I know a previous poster said to get a like-for-like quote however I wanted to see what he deemed as ‘essential’. He offered to: Replace rotten soffit and fascia boards Paint these and the existing ones in a particular type of paint to preserve them Re-mortar...

    Quote for roof work

Yeah I’ll just have to live with the possibility of that I’m afraid due to budget constraints - it’s urgent work only at the moment.

    Quote for roof work

Yes this was discussed and any rotten bits will be replaced Yes it’s looking tired and I’d like to prevent future weathering. Existing mortar does need repointing yes

    Quote for roof work

So what we saying sack off the UPVC over clad and just replace wooden boards? If so then most wooden boards are fine

    Quote for roof work

When you say overclad do you mean the fascia’s? It’s UPVC going over the existing ones

    Quote for roof work

I’m going to get another quote but this seems reasonable to me, however it’s the Mrs I need to convince. I’d rather spend money now on maintenance than having to fork out loads more on bigger repairs down the line. I did try getting other quotes but it’s difficult - will keep on it to get...

    Leaking waste pipe under toilet

Gotcha thanks - how are flush pipes and pan connectors normally connected to the pan itself? Are the easy to disconnect and refit?

    Leaking waste pipe under toilet

Where do you see a hole? Is the pan connector what connects the pipe from the cistern to the pan? When I said sealant I meant it looked like the pipe connected to the pan was stuck together using sealant of some sort but I could be wrong! Not sure if it’s mains or not I’ll test at the...

    Leaking waste pipe under toilet

I discovered a leak from what I think is the waste pipe under this stupidly fancy toilet in our guest WC that appears to have been put together by a tradie who forgot their specs. Whenever the flush is activated a small stream of water forms next to the flexi waste pipe here: Here are some...
