Thermal imaging camera to detect cold spots in the home

I’d like to find out cold spots in my new house and I’ve read thermal cameras are good for detecting these. The issue I have is there are so many on the market I don’t know which would be good for this task alone without spending a small fortune. FLIR seem to be the top in the industry and do...

Any point in upgrading glass in existing window frames?

Great advice thanks - I’m not sure how thick my existing panes are but I reckon 22mm… won’t know until I take one out and measure. Regarding cost I have seen this with what I was charged to have a couple of panes replaced with acoustic glass, I don’t think it would have been cheaper to buy and...

Any point in upgrading glass in existing window frames?

Yes - the guy that built this house had a double glazing business so I’m hoping he installed good quality frames. They are in remarkably good condition considering g their age. Below is a pic (not best lighting and I fitted a new handle today):

I’m assuming you did this DIY - was it fairly straightforward? YouTube seems to suggest so

Any point in upgrading glass in existing window frames?

My windows are 30 years old and the frames are in decent condition. The glass planes just have air in the gaps rather than argon. Is thee any point in me DIYing putting in modern panes of glass to increase heat retention or is it a waste of time and money? I’m currently looking to replace...

How to clear high inaccessible guttering

Ok hiring a scaffold tower is possible for the roof cleaning but it won’t get to the inaccessible gutter - I’ve included a terrible computer drawing below with the problem gutter shown in orange:

How to clear high inaccessible guttering

So for this task along if would make complete sense just to get someone round to do it so I agree with you all. I also need my roof cleaned and trying to get quotes is difficult - one I did get was £870 (which I believe includes gutters) - OK fair enough it is a 4 bed detached. Is it possible...

Oil boiler not heating hot water but most radiators are fine

For anyone interested we’ve just had a heating engineer round and it turns out there was little to no water in the upstairs radiators (and also I assume the hot water tank coil). They’ve fed water back into the system but what concerns me is where that water that was missing went… If it happens...

Oil boiler not heating hot water but most radiators are fine

Ah ok - so the big cold tank doesn’t feed the central heating, it’s the smaller one that does this?

Oil boiler not heating hot water but most radiators are fine

Not tried letting air out yet but we can try that. I think the cold feed to the hot water tank is fine as the water still runs out of the hot taps fine, just cold. I can hear the cold tank in the loft filling up when I run the hot tap as well.

Oil boiler not heating hot water but most radiators are fine

Yes there is This is my in laws house where I’m staying at the moment - they’ve been here 35 years and never encountered this issue. You definitely can only have hot water with the heating on as well, unless you use the immersion. We have 2 tanks in the loft, one for cold water and the other I...

Oil boiler not heating hot water but most radiators are fine

This is partly a DIY question in that I’d like to try and pinpoint the issue before reaching out to a professional. We have an old open vented oil heating system, with 2 tanks in the loft. There’s no thermostat and you can’t heat the water in the hot water tank without also having the central...
