    Boiler Location

Really dont fancy having the flue come up through the vault of the cellar and then taking up space in the kitchen on it's way to a suitable outlet point...

    Boiler Location

Yep, the boiler could move to the bit of cellar directly below the kitchen but that part of the cellar is fully below ground and right by the back door etc so quite well used. Any heat that the boiler gave off locally would also be pretty much wasted in that area of the cellar. It is also a...

    Boiler Location

^^^ Thanks, that is what I was affraid of. I dont think the flue would be a problem since the cellar is only half below ground at that point so I think it could have exited a good foot above ground...

Is it possible to get REALLY REALY good pipe lagging to help reduce the delay?

    Boiler Location

I had wanted to put the new condensing combi (sorry) boiler in a seperate utility room, but it now seems that this isnt going to be possible. So our options are to have it in the Kitchen or the Cellar. Kitchen is due to be completely re-done very soon; two partition walls to come down...

    Pressure testing

Car foot pump pressure gauges are a joke... Mine reads 30psi (2 bar) when in reality the pressure is more like 20psi (1.3bar)...

    fan reconditioning

Yeah that was them... I was quoted £100 plus for a "new" unit elsewhere, and about £30 for a reconditioned one (had to hand over my old one) from them. The guy was really really helpful and the quality of the reconditioning was first class. All the old parts had been plated and it was a new...

Choosing a Greenstar 30 HE plus combi

^^^ 10kW is the initial load with just the ground floor plumbed... The extra expansion tank will be fitted when we do the first floor and loft rads.. which will bring the load up to about 24kW and the volume up to 140litres odd...

    fan reconditioning

Fans are a con price-wise... I got a re-conditioned one off a guy in Watford (forget the name, sorry) and it was a belter still going strong 3 years later and half the price of a new one.... actually looked better than the new ones.. all plated etc... Found him on google just by putting in...

Choosing a Greenstar 30 HE plus combi

I cant find the capacity of the built in expansion tank now but I seem to remember that it is limited to a total system volume of about 100-125litres ? We anticipate having a total system volume of about 140litres eventually... Gas supply pipe will be fairly long (about 12-15m) and will...

Choosing a Greenstar 30 HE plus combi

Should be getting a boiler fitted in the next few weeks so it is time to decide on one. Seems like the Greenstar 30 HE plus combi is the one we will go for. Any horror stories, special problems/issues or precautions... Information:- Very soft water area. Flue should be straight...

    Cost of Central Heating

Dont suppose anyone knows where to get the Thermocrete type lining stuff for a DIY job? Always a bit nervous of specialists that turn up with a pump and just fill something up where you can never see it... and of course I am a cheapskate... :)

    Cost of Central Heating

^^^ Yeah that's what I thought.. too much hassle for just one rad... Did you line your chimney? If so with what? The Thermocrete sounds liek a good solution but I suspect it's expensive...

    Cost of Central Heating

^^^ that's about what I thought (header tank) seems a bit excessive for just one rad... The idea was to have it as a seperate system to the CH just as a back-up or alternative to heating the whole house. Stove could heat the living room and the single extension rad would heat the bedroom...

    Cost of Central Heating

The other option is to have a massive lump of aluminium and stick it on the top to warm up during the evening ten take it up to bed at night... :)

    Cost of Central Heating

Been looking into it and there are a few wood burning stoves that are exmpt from smokeless fuel regulation thingy because they burn so efficiently... So I am looking at it again... Our bedroom will be directly above the main living space (Kitchen, dinning, living) so we could potentially...

    Cost of Central Heating

^^^ no pump? I always assumed you still needed a pump with one of those... I was tempted to go that way until I found out our new house is in a smokeless fuel area... wanted to burn wood...

    Cost of Central Heating

I was doing some research on this recently and I cant find it now, but I did find a page suggesting there was a fixed charge of £500 (ish) for a new connection provided you were within 30meters (I think) of the gas main... Sorry to be so vague but it gives you a ballpark figure to work with...

    Loft Extension

Since you are going to change the roof-line you will need planning permission. You need fairly detailed plans to apply for the planning permission. All in its a pretty big job so you probably want to get a builder in anyway...
