fear not, I have fan cover gauze to prevent insects crawling in.

Biltong box - need to power a 100W bulb and a 12V fan

Yes, exactly what I'm thinking. So I think 100W plus fan, will get ambient temps + 10degrees or so will be fine. The moisture is what brings on mould which is why it's needs to be drawn out (with the fan). I'll put some tin foil at the bottom to make sure that the heat is bounced upwards...

Biltong box - need to power a 100W bulb and a 12V fan

Good guess I am using 10mm ply for the box. Well the technically I dont need to hold the air in the box and find steady state, I need to raise the temperature around the beef to dry it before pulling it out. This prevents mold (from what i read). I'm trying to find information to back...

Biltong box - need to power a 100W bulb and a 12V fan

dry air is 1.00 kJ per kgC the density of air at 30C is 1.2 kg/m^3 my box is 0.18m^3 0.18x1.2=0.216Kg of air 100joules (what the bulb is supposed to be producing)=1000 joules per kgC x change (delta) in temperature x 0.216Kg delta temp = 0.1/0.216 delta temp = 0.46 degrees C in one...

Biltong box - need to power a 100W bulb and a 12V fan

230V fan looks like the answer. Thanks very much everyone for being so helpful, i'll post some pictures when it's finished.

Biltong box - need to power a 100W bulb and a 12V fan

[/url] Definitely worth a consideration. There's no problems with using a fan of this size? Slightly concerned about how the power is distributed in the fan, are they prone to over heating that sort of thing. 12V fan seems a bit safer.

Biltong box - need to power a 100W bulb and a 12V fan

Indeed, but, despite having 80mm holes in the top walls of the box, the air flow might not be enough to draw the moisture out quickly enough. This would produce condensation and the meat potentially stewing/steaming/moisture dropping to the bottom of the box and causing a puddle. The lamp is...

Biltong box - need to power a 100W bulb and a 12V fan

Thanks, yes I have some grated fan enclosures, which are mounted in the bottom of the box to allow air to come in. I should also say that the bulb will not direct heat in one direction, as a fan heater would. My worry about using a fan heater directed up, would be that it'd cook the meat...

Biltong box - need to power a 100W bulb and a 12V fan

I plan on running the electrics on the outside of the box. The fan will be mounted in the wall. I have bought and mounted a MK Shockguard Batten Lampholder. The cable runs straight into the back of the box and is connected to the lampholder already. My dilemma is really regarding...

Biltong box - need to power a 100W bulb and a 12V fan

The light bulb (located at the bottom) for the box, which measures 900x500x400, is supposed to heat the internal area to roughly 60degsC. The moisture, from the drying meat, is sucked out of the top by the fan.

any ideas? computer psu can deliver the 12v but that's overkill and i'd need another plug socket.

Biltong box - need to power a 100W bulb and a 12V fan

winston1, I appreciate that you're responding to my thread, but the only thing you've done is criticise so far and even one of those was wrong. I would like to use one mains cable for my box. It must power the lamp and the fan (however this can be done). I dont want to run two mains cables...

Biltong box - need to power a 100W bulb and a 12V fan

This is the one i had in mind. I'm not sure of the fan rating (except it's a 12V fan), but i can see that the converter is min 0.5W, which is only about 42mA. http://tinyurl.com/n5qdoda I'm actually really interested in the best way to make the circuit with the 100W (230V) bulb, plus the...

Biltong box - need to power a 100W bulb and a 12V fan

Hi, I need to power a 100W bulb (for heating) and a 12V PC fan (for extracting the moisture). I was thinking of using a LED Driver Power Supply Transformer 240V - DC 12V to power the PC fan. Ideally I'd like to have a RCD between mains and the light/fan combo. Anyone got any...
