fitting a fire with a balanced flue into a chimney..

Is there no mention of a maximum length? I'm not a RGI, but I do know that the overall horizontal and vertical lengths play a big role in flues for boilers and water heaters.

fitting a fire with a balanced flue into a chimney..

Get a fire that is designed to be installed into a flued chimney? Better yet, get a RGI to install it.

    Lounge/Dining Room Revamp

So, After some discussions with the wife and having a play about with the furniture layout, it would seem that the preferred plan now is to construct the porch, but have it entering the lounge at an angle of 90 degrees to the front door (as opposed to the Dining Room as originally intended)...

Tenement Flat Scotland - major refurb (near original state)

It will be worth the graft if you can get it all back to bare wood!

Tenement Flat Scotland - major refurb (near original state)

You should be getting e-mails to noify you of all replies to the topic, not just your posts. There's a box below the text box in which you type a reply that should be checked. Looks like you're getting on well with the flat. I take it the plaster is in pretty good shape if you can paint...

    First time kitchen re-fit

Not sure on your budget, but I would try and stretch it a little and get new base units too as it will save loads of hassle when fitting the doors etc... Plus you'll get another 15 years out of your kitchen! Getting a pro to mitre your joints is a must if you're on a budget too. One...

    Gas Hobs

Totally possible to tee off. You just need to ensure that the pressure loss in the pipework from the meter/governor to the appliance furthest away fro the meter/governor is less than 120 Pa. I would imagine that a 22mm feed to a domestic boiler should be sufficient to run both the boiler...

    A boiler with a 22m cold/hot feed?

Like Andy says, for that size house with such a busy, consistent demand for hot water, I'd be recommending an unvented cylinder. Plus you get the added bonus of if something goes wrong with the boiler you've got an immersion heater for back-up. I know how bad it gets when a certain person in...

    Lounge/Dining Room Revamp

Yes the height is quite different so some some of step arrangement would need to be built too, which would probably impact on the ability to draw our cars down there. We also think that the other end of the terrace is how ours might have looked before the conversion from 2 houses to 1. We...

    A boiler with a 22m cold/hot feed?

Ahh, now it makes sense! The only problem with a combi is that if you're in the shower and someone turns a hot tap on in the kitchen, you'll know about it!! My advice would be to scrap the water heater in the kitchen and get a new system boiler in the garage, along with an unvented water...

    A boiler with a 22m cold/hot feed?

If it's an open-vented system with F&E cistern above a cylinder then the size of the boiler pipework won't make a bean of difference to your hot/cold water flow. Your new incoming cold water pipework won't improve your hot water flow either as the cold feed a cistern which then gravity flows...

    Lounge/Dining Room Revamp

Even better, a "trick" front door!!! Seriously though, I think moving the front door is a little beyond what we're looking to do. We do have a pantry-type space in the kitchen which looks like it used to be a doorway through, but due to the angle of the re-built gable wall I'm not so sure if...

    Lounge/Dining Room Revamp

Hmm, I like that idea! Got me wondering why they didn't do it like that when they did the conversion in the first place! The only thing I woldn't be keen on is the "bricked up" appearance left by the removed front door. As I know nothing about brickwork, would a decent brickie be able to...

    Lounge/Dining Room Revamp

Yes I have thought of that, however I really can't figure out where the doors would have been. It's an end terrace, but the last house was at 90 degrees to the second to last house (in an L-shape). When the conversion was done the majority of the turned house was knocked down and the gable end...

    Lounge/Dining Room Revamp

Blimey, your house must be big if you think ours is small! I do understand what you're saying though, and it is very good for bringing things in the house like furniture, shopping etc... and putting a porch in where you have to turn 90 degrees would restrict that. However at the back of...

    Lounge/Dining Room Revamp

Again, that's something we considered, but we felt it wouldn't entirely solve the problem as you'd have to make sure you closed the porch door before opening the front door etc... Plus it wouldn't help with the amount of heat we currently lose through there being an external door there...

    Lounge/Dining Room Revamp

I had thought of this initially, however the lounge also has a chimney breast (not shown on my awful) sketch which houses our gas fire which made me reluctant to go for this option. I might re-visit it as a consideration though as it would save on building the porch and the other building...
