    Spirotech filter question

My son just bought his first house and we found the CH has a Spirotech filter on the return to the boiler. There is no external magnet though which i have seen in adverts for Spirotech - it's a black jacket on body of the filter. Are there models without the external filter ?

    Fitting new soffits and facias

Don't forget the eves tray mentioned above. The original probably had roofing felt overhanging the gutter - this felt is often decayed and and torn back. The eves tray tucks under what's left of the felt.

    Guttering brackets to low.

I have seen alluminium preformed/ pressed guttering which is screwed directly to the facia. It has a flat back with a fancy front profile. They used to come with flat strips of ali and run it through various rollers to make the gutter on site, made to measure. See Ebay adverts - they still do...

    Gutter Downpipe Adapter

I did what you did - put a 68mm. piece over the 63mm pipe with some 68mm pipe sticking up to take a 68mm fitting. I used weld solvent cement and when that had set, I ran some mastic on the inside and the outside to seal it. Silicone does eventually fail, but the solvent cement is used in sink...

Any tips on replacing my tiled shed roof with felt?

AN observation I have is the use of adhesive - I recently had to re-felt my 10x12 shed which was delivered and installed by a company about 5 yrs ago. They had used felt adhesive and it was pain to get off. They had stuck it down to the boarded roof and i had to hand scrape quitea large area to...

The old 68mm to 63mm down pipe problem.

Job done ! I put a piece of 68mm over 63mm pipe with weld cement. Further sealed it with some old mastic. Left enough 68mm pipe above the joint to take a 68mm m/f joining socket. The downpipe goes into the socket, with a little adjustment (cuttin You can see where the old water butt stood on...

Vokera Mynute 20e - No Pressure, No Fill Loop

Start with the basics - power at the boiler , some sort of indicator light onthe boiler. Water inthe system - try a radiator bleed screw to see if it squirts out. Gas - trace from gas meter to boiler to see if valves are open. Don't open any gas valves if you find gas is turned off - get a gas...

    Leaking mixer tap

You need to change the rubber o ring seals at the bottom of the spout. There usually a screw athe back ( prob nedd small allen key) - when screw removed, you can lift the spout out. You need to identify the make and model and get the correct o ring kit.

Blocked shower waste + awkward pipework

Looks like the pipe goes into the strap boss with a rubber bung gasket ? If so you should be able to pull it out and redo the run.

How hot should a combi pump get ?

The boiler water temp can be adjusted but is usually too hot to hold but you can touch for a second or two. It depends on what your boiler is set to. Even if you don't have the CH on, the boiler water still goes through a heat exchanger to heat the domestic HW.

The old 68mm to 63mm down pipe problem.

I am removing a water butt with a diverter thing in the down pipe. I found that the upper pipe is 68mm ( having been upgraded inthe past) but the lower pipe below the diverter is the old 63mm. I notice that a 68mm pipe will fit over the old 63mm but it is a loose fit. Could I solvent weld this...

    Kitchen Plumbing

Generally there are two sizes of connector for sinks 11/4" (wash basins) and 11/2"(kitchen sink). The picture shows a trap with a 11/2" connector. This will have a standard thread for connecting to a 1 1/2" sink waste. Sounds as though you have an old sink with a smaller waste,or you have...

Silly question about parallel CH pipe runs :-(

The flow to each radiator is quite slow to balance the system, most valves are only partially open. If you short the flow to the return it will create a low resistance bypass and radiators will not heat.

    What is this pipe for?

The oily rag was an old plumbers trick to seal off non live pipes !

Shower alternates between hot and cold... Boiler is fine.

Perhaps the flow rate is being restricted somewhere on the cold input to the boiler ? Measure the max litres per minute you are out of hot tap - time how long ittakes to fill a 5 litre bucket or watering can.

    American Fridge Freezer Plumbing

Changing the filter is a little more complicated - you have to run the new filter into a bucket to clear out loose carbon - quite a lot of black stuff comes out. This means carrying a bucket of water downfrom the loft each time. Then you run a tall glass of water to see if it is running clear ...

    Toilet and soil pipe confusion...

Sometimes when you connect the toilet, it goes in too far so restricting the flow because of the tight bend in the connector. Although this one looks as though the connector has an edge to stop this happening.
