    Car battery

A number of cars will do exactly that - if you leave an interior light on, or the boot open for an amount of time, or the radio switched on, etc. the car will turn them off either after a pre-set time or when the battery voltage reaches a certain level. I found this particularly annoying if you...

    Split Inverter Air Conditioning

As has already been said, this looks like an inverter system from the variable power and also the high efficiency rating, however you really should make sure it is inverter as the start-up currents of the non-inverter systems can be massive. I.e. in the 3 - 8 times full load range, also the...

    Car battery

I agree with your calculations and I think as you're suggesting a 250 Ah battery would be very large - that's bigger than some HGVs. A circa 100 Ah battery is more typical for the vehicles I mentioned giving just over 3 weeks' standby allowing ~25% remaining capacity. However these vehicles...

    Car battery

I know this thread is a week or so old, but on the subject of the car starting ok after being jump started but not starting the next morning, the current required by the starter to start the engine is likely to be much higher the next morning when then engine has had time to completely cool...

Advice on 230v patio and wall lights

Hi, thanks for the replies. It sounds like these are common problems! I like the idea of lights on top of the wall, will have a look into those - although don't want anything that's a trip hazard or in the way as these walls are between levels of patio so will have people walking up and down...

Advice on 230v patio and wall lights

Hi, we're having a patio and some retaining walls put in and have been asked to choose some lights, we want some lights in the patio itself and some flush 'brick' ones in the walls and I'm looking for advice on what ones would be suitable, properly waterproof and last a long time please...

    RCD Discrimination

Thanks for your comments, yes the original install is pre-16th edition, possibly even pre-15th so before an RCD requirement at the time of install. Armoured cable is an interesting thought, the size and bend radius would prevent it being easily retrofitted though. The feed is unlikely to be...

    RCD Discrimination

Hi, looking for some advice on RCD discrimination please. Incoming mains goes via the meter and splits to feed 1 consumer unit for one section of the house and another feed goes via a switch that holds what looks like a single BS1361 fuse (60A – too high I think as 10mmsq t&e not clipped direct...

    Does this need an Earth?

Nozzle - good thought, I have just inspected it and it's all metal, but mostly copper plate. Some parts attract a magnet and some don't. I expect the magnetic parts are steel and the non-magnetic parts are either brass or possibly copper.

    Does this need an Earth?

OK thanks, yes, it looks like I could add an Earth tag to the bulb holder assembly. Good idea for the test, I'm sure I can find something to pass a reasonably high current through it to check for a good connection. Slightly annoying that these things ship from China in what is not really a...

    Does this need an Earth?

I didn't think it looked very good when I opened it up. However do you think it would be ok with the addition of an Earth, as in new 3-core cable from the rose and an Earth tag fitted?

    Does this need an Earth?

The supplied cable from the rose to the bulb holder is 2 core so there is no Earth connection to the metal bulb holder at all.

    Does this need an Earth?

Yes, there is strain relief which is the black plastic 'gland' you can see at the top of the bulb holder in the second photo. Still seems a bit ropey though and yes, 6 foot under is probably right!

    Does this need an Earth?

Hi, I have a few of these Chinese manufactured lights to fit as bedsides lights (copper plated metal with built in switch). The ceiling rose has an Earth tag, but the supplied wire to the bulb holder is 2 core and there is no Earth connection to the metal light fitting that is going to be...

Valves for isolating flow and return to radiators?

Great, thanks Burnerman John, that's exactly what I was thinking. Would you be happy with something like this? http://www.toolstation.com/shop/p14624

Valves for isolating flow and return to radiators?

As part of a slow renovation of an old property several radiators in one section of the house require renewing / relocating and there will be an additional radiator fitted. I would like to isolate this section of the heating so the rest of the house can still be heated and have hot water (combi...

    Appliance fuses

ericmark mentioned the unfused hospital red plugs, just out of interest this is an old NHS Scotland guidance note regarding the plugs. Basically saying that the cable must be 4mmsq or larger and hence the protective device supplying the outlet provides adequate protection when they are used...

    Appliance fuses

I think we are on the same page now :) and I have already agreed with you that fitting smaller fuses is not necessary. The bullet-resistant glass analogy is an interesting one and I can see what you are saying - if the glass already protects you, then yes making it thicker would make the glass...

    Appliance fuses

If you think I have confused those two words, you have clearly misunderstood everything I and others have said. Your own linked Oxford definition is appropriate here theory - "A supposition or a system of ideas intended to explain something, especially one based on general principles...
