Should be no problem cutting 2-3mm off the pipe with a decent junior saw and blade. Forget the file. Goodness knows how much crap and filings dropped down the pipe into the system.

If it is the hot tap dripping then just turn off the cold supply to the boiler. You will find that valve under the boiler.

Check the system pressure has not dropped. Look for at least 1bar on the pressure gauge.

Yes it is possible to have a nail in a gas pipe with no problems or gas smell for nine years. Turn off your gas at the emergency valve at the meter and call in a registered gas fitter to investigate and put right if required. Don't let the builder do any work on it at all unless he can...

I would say that the screw is under the disc on top where the H is. Use some rag or tissue under a pair of grips or pliers and unscrew it.

Looks like a Philmac or similar make of end cap. Get rid of all that PTFE tape and reassemble. That stuff has no business on that type of compression fitting. Make sure that the gripper and O rings go back in the correct order. Also make sure you have the correct size/type of fitting...

The first thing to check would be the shower head. Make sure the flow has not been reduced too much due to lime scale. Remove the head and turn on the shower, does the water heat up properly now?

Either your room stat is faulty or the temperature in the hall is higher than the temp you are trying to set to. Put another thermometer close to the room stat for a few hours to check against.

You say you are competent to install your own boiler. There is nothing to stop you doing the install yourself and making the notification to building control. There is no requirement to notify through Gassafe (or any other organisation) Building control will inspect the installation...
