    Burger van sink

Caravan and Boat suppliers often do smaller-than-average bits like this.

    Anyone been burgled?

This is relevant for us as we were burgled two weeks ago. After attempting but failing to get in the UPVC back door, they got in through a locked window by bending the anodised aluminum frame (Everest windows) and exited by the back door (key near door). They stole (only) my wife's engagement...

    Printing posters

You are not limited to 72pt in Word! Although the drop down box only has values up to 72pt, you can in fact type much larger values directly into the font size box.

Pooly fitted worktop, how big a gap will tiling hide?

I guess it's possible if the wall is not square or flat then maybe the base units will not go far back enough. If you then fit a standard width worktop you might need to bring it forward slightly in order to have sufficient overhang at the front. If the gap has to stay, ie you cant mitre the...

Early 1970s Plug wiring - Two Core?

The red is the live (to the fuse side of a 13amp plug) and the black is the neutral. If it's original 2-core cable then it doesn't need an earth.

    kitchen sink trap wont drain

What if you disconnect the trap, put a bucket under the sink and run the tap? Also wonder whether a blocked overflow could cause this?

    Reading material

Take a trip to your library (remember those?). A larger town-centre library will have a whole range of books covering that subject which you can browse, borrow, or note down in order to buy your own copy.

    Torque wrench recommendation and size

A half-inch socket has a cut-out which is half-inch by half-inch. ie it's the flat not the diagonal. I have used a Kamasa torque wrench for several years when working on my motorbike. I got it after it was a Best Buy in a Car Mechanics Magazine (Autocar?). It has a range of 10 to 150 ft/lb...

    Washing Machine relocate

I think you're onto a loser here! How are you proposing to get a mains water pipe and a drain hose from the kitchen sink cupboard to the cupboard on the right (middle picture). It would have to be protected somehow which would mean running it under some sort of platform. The distance from the...

Cutting and Sealing Kitchen End Panels

In the past I have painted the cut ends - including cut-outs in worktops -with silicone sealant. Use an old paintbrush (or one from a pound shop multipack) which you can throw away afterwards and paint the silicone on liberally. I've never had water ingress problems using this method.

Not sure how to hinge Loft Hatch, edge of ladder in the way!

My loft hatch hinges downwards on the same side as the ladder. You need to remove the ledge that your hatch currently sits on and fit a catch.

B&Q £200 cement mixer - anyone used it?

I bought the Wickes one which was about £200 last year but I now see it's advertised at £250. It's worked perfectly. As you only want it for one job before selling, why not try and buy a secondhand one in the first place?

My "Given appropriate safety precautions" comment was the equivalent of a disclaimer on my part!

    Paint Hallway above stairs

Are you rollering? Most paint roller handles are hollow to take a handle extender or a broom handle. Cutting in the edges is a bit trickier. Have you got a ladder that you can put the feet of into the back of the stair tread and leant against the wall in pic. 2. Given appropriate safety...

hotpoint wt960 not spinning properly !!!

Both times this has happened to me the fault has been the carbon brushes in the motor. Replacement is an easy fix if you're competent and methodical. This guide may be useful although I can't vouch for its detailed accuracy ...

    What are these brackets called?

I think it would be called something like a "stepped bracket". You want it to go up the door then out 2" or so and then up again. I wondered whether a U-shaped bracket would work for your application (ie down-out-up)?

    Wallpapering a feature wall *Advice*

Stating the obvious I hope, but when you do the second and third lengths make sure you do any pattern matching first before cutting the paper to length. (Yes, I've made that mistake - but just once!)

    Paint windows

I wouldn't paint the windows as it wouldn't then let the light through. Leave them transparent.

Wallpapering a chimney breast, but fireplace isn't central.

I don't think it's the sort of pattern you'll notice being 3" off-centre so long as you can't see the joins.

Wallpapering a chimney breast, but fireplace isn't central.

What's the pattern like on the wallpaper? A small horizontal repeat such as thin vertical stripes or small swirlies probably wouldn't notice but a bigger geometric pattern might.
