    Shower pull switch in plasterboard...

Thanks all, I've decided to go through the floor above. Spring toggles are too big for the small hole and those pull switches are pretty stiff - lot of downward force will be created. Was tempted by the cooker switch idea, but not on a ceiling (and a high one at that).

    Shower pull switch in plasterboard...

I have these: https://www.screwfix.com/p/easyfix-spring-toggles-5-x-50mm-20-pack/4257x A combination of those and maybe some expanding foam squirted into the gap between the old and new ceilings should provide enough resistance against the ceiling being pulled down when the switch is yanked...

    Shower pull switch in plasterboard...

I used 25mm battens between ceilings. Bit of a gap to span.

    Shower pull switch in plasterboard...

I think I know the answer to this but... I have overboarded (underboarded?) my bathroom ceiling, made a hole and pulled through the shower cable for the pull isolator switch. I think the old switch was just attached to the lath and plaster ceiling above, so no noggins / joists to screw into...

    Scrim over angle bead?

Thanks. I guess it can't hurt to put a bit down the edges. Good idea on the screws, but I used far too many to start with, I'd be there for weeks. Next time.

    Scrim over angle bead?

Question for all you plasterers. Do you scrim over the edges of the angle beading?

    Lighting/extractor junction box

    Nice one.

    Lighting/extractor junction box

Purely theoretical question: What do you do when you have 6 * 1.5mm cables to fit in a heavy duty junction box that is only supposed to take 4 * 2.5mm cables? Eg. Ring in Ring out Switch Lights 1 Lights 2 Timer Extractor (3 core and earth) Do you Cram them all in? (Tight, but they'll fit)...

Batten and Board - Fitting the Vapour Layer

Hi I'm currently renovating my bathroom. Taken all the walls back to brick, and started to overboard the artex ceiling. I'm going to batten and board all the walls, infilled with kingspan, and I have bought a vapour layer to prevent moisture condensing on the insulation. 2 questions, really...

    Bathroom floor tiling.

Thanks, yes it's all going back to brick.

    Bathroom floor tiling.

Hi, I want to tile the bathroom floor. Currently there are some very uneven floorboards (which are not very well supported in places due to bad notching). I could just lay the ply on top, but is there any reason not to rip the boards up first and just lay the ply on the joists? It would avoid...

    French Drain

Hi all, I'm planning to install a perforated pipe/french drain system in my garden. There will probably be about 7 upstream endpoints, all draining into one pipe, then out through a wall into some wasteland. Does anyone know if (and how) these are usually vented? And whether/how you could...

    Bathroom light tripping rcd

Thanks for the replies. They're switching on and off fine again now. Have left it all running while we go around switching other things on, plugging and unplugging fairy lights etc. Nothing trips it. (edit: I know I need to do this in a more thorough methodical way as above when time permits)...

    Bathroom light tripping rcd

My bathroom lights keep tripping the rcd when I switch them on, not just the one circuit, but half the board! There are 5 led gu10 bulbs on the circuit, plus an extractor fan wired into the switched live and main live (for the timer). The extractor is not yet firmly screwed into the wall...

    Relative Humidity

    ... That's actually properly reassuring.

    Relative Humidity

Ye, I've read more posts on the chimney subject than I'd like to admit to. Suffice to say that I wish now that I'd specced into the original job some ducting that went up and then a 90 degree turn and out through the wall in the ceiling gap. Be a right mess to do it now.

    Relative Humidity

Thanks all for the comments. Yes, kitchen uses gas cooker and no proper extraction (just into chimney space, so we tend not to use). Need to sort this. Condensor drier in utility room, usually shut door and open window. Dehumidifier (dd128) is filling up (2.3L) every 12 hours. I like the...

    Relative Humidity

Hi all, Big old Victorian Semi-detached house, hermetically sealed with too much wallpaper, a damp cellar wall, (although cellar is reasonably well ventilated and shut off from the rest of the house) . When we moved in the bathrooms didn't have extractor fans, have fitted one, planning to...

Radiator or electric towel rail in ensuite?

Thanks, might save a lot of notching and adding yet another rad to the system.

Radiator or electric towel rail in ensuite?

Can they run from the mains (fused spur)? I think I'm going to have to use the last slot on the consumer unit for the shower.
