Difference between expansion and header tanks?

That makes sense... so drain the system and then clean off the walls of the f/e tank. Will do. Thanks.

Difference between expansion and header tanks?

Thanks. I think I know how to drain the system -- essentially kill the incoming water at the stopcock, connect a pipe to a downstairs radiator, open up the bleed valves all round and let it all run out. Please let me know if that's wrong? As for flushing, I'm not so sure what you mean? I know...

Difference between expansion and header tanks?

Hi chaps, I first want to add some cleanser and then some inhibitor/protector into our CH system, which I believe to be an open-vented type. However, I really want to check that what I think I know is actually right… In the loft I have a large water tank and alongside, a much smaller tank...

CH all the while - Honeywell Sundial Y Plan auto or manual?

Thought I'd post the conclusion, in case it helps someone in the future... The Heateam chap came today and yep, the diverter valve was sticking. So, he replaced that and all seems fine. So far, anyway! Thanks to all.

CH all the while - Honeywell Sundial Y Plan auto or manual?

Sorry for delayed response - had to get kids to bed. Anyway, I had a play with the lever and there does seem to be spring pressure if pushed towards Manual - so that's expected behaviour, I guess. However, when at the midpoint there's no spring pressure all: the lever can be very easily moved...

CH all the while - Honeywell Sundial Y Plan auto or manual?

In fact, on closer inspection it actually looks like its in a mid-position -- see the photo I just snapped. Is this how it should be?

CH all the while - Honeywell Sundial Y Plan auto or manual?

Hi, Had a few problems with our Potterton Suprima 50 boiler that has resulted in a few visits from the Heateam chaps. To cut a long story to the short current problem, the engineer replaced a thermistor yesterday and said all should now be well. However, since he left, it’s transpired that...

Kettle-like noise from water tank then boiler trips out...

Thought I'd just post the conclusion here, in case it helps anyone in the future... The engineer turned up and very quickly diagnosed a failing CH circulation pump as the problem. Two or so hours of hacking copper pipes out (cos the old motor was stuck) and we have a new motor and this indeed...

Kettle-like noise from water tank then boiler trips out...

I have tried the pump on both settings 2 and 3 (it was on 3 originally) -- no obvious difference and the problem recurs. Also, last night, I was brave and unscrewed and withdrew the manual restart knob: I felt it engage with the motor and I could feel the impeller turning, with no obvious...

Kettle-like noise from water tank then boiler trips out...

Just bumping this topic as I’ve conducted a few more experiments and have more information. Basically, the kettling noise followed by boiler lockout now happens very quickly after the boiler has fired – usually within around 5 minutes. A lot of the noise seems to be coming from the circulator...

Kettle-like noise from water tank then boiler trips out...

That's my biggest fear - I may be buried alive under towels and bedding. I'll tread carefully.

Kettle-like noise from water tank then boiler trips out...

Love the diagram - thanks! I'll have a look for this valve later (not at home right now). I assume I just open it carefully, with the system shut down, and wait for water to appear? I'll assume, also, that it's safe for me to do this. If not, please shout at me. Harry.

Kettle-like noise from water tank then boiler trips out...

Thanks muchly - what would this air-bleed point look like and is it safe for me to do it? I'm very happy to pay for a professional if not.

Kettle-like noise from water tank then boiler trips out...

Hello, We've recently moved to a modern/new-build house (11 years old) that has CH driven by an Potterton Suprima 50 boiler, fitted when the house was built (so also 11 years old). Since we moved in, we’ve had a few problems with the boiler tripping out to lockout mode after just a few...

Sudden bright lights - overvoltage/spikes? What to do?

Right folks, bumping this topic up 'cos I think I've discovered some new information about the possible cause of my light-brightening situation and could do with some more advice. I was, literally just five minutes ago, sat on the downstairs bog when I glanced up and noticed a water mark all...

Sudden bright lights - overvoltage/spikes? What to do?

Just to keep this post up to date, as it may one day prove useful to someone else, we had a qualified electrician around today who gave the household electrics/circuits a clean bill of health. But the spikes continue. As a result, the DNO has agreed now to return to fit a voltage-recording...

Sudden bright lights - overvoltage/spikes? What to do?

Well, he *definitely* didn't measure anything while I switched stuff on/off. He pulled apart the meter, shut down the household electrics, attached his meter, looked at it for a minute or two then reported back with a 244v reading, which he said was within the normal range. Then he switched the...

Sudden bright lights - overvoltage/spikes? What to do?

Are you sure he only measured the voltage? Word of mouth is the best way, but otherwise have a look here. Have a look for 'full scope'. Well, no - I'm not an electrician so I in fact don't know for sure what he checked. I do know that he took the house meter apart, connected his own meter...

Sudden bright lights - overvoltage/spikes? What to do?

Well, the chap from the DNO turned up at 9.30pm. He was very nice but his testing amounted only to connecting a test rig to our home's incoming supply, at the meter box, and reading a voltage of 244v, which is well within the 216-253v operating margin. However, as I said to him, with these...
