Electrics and a new kitchen - what order and how long?

Sorry - and another question - do building regs also dictate/recommend the amount of work surface either side of the cooker? In the current lay out the cooker is at the end of a run of units (the opened door just misses it when it is opened back against the wall). The wall against which the...

Electrics and a new kitchen - what order and how long?

hi everyone - any thoughts on the location of the socket for my washing machine - I understand it has to be above the counter - but could I actually get the flex for the washing machine extended and run under the floor boards to the other side of the door - where it would be at least 30cm from...

doweling to build a collapsible canoe?

thanks scrit and jasonb - that's really helpful advice. Next step is to find the ash, I think! Can you recommend anywhere that does decent wood by mail order - I'm doubting that my local builder's merchants will carry ash/poplar which I could visually check before I bought it - and I'm wary...

doweling to build a collapsible canoe?

any help much appreciated ... (very old) plans for a collapsible canoe call for a plank of white ash to be effectively whittled into doweling rods 12 feet long and 1 inch in diamater. I wondered whether the normal dowelling rods (eg sold for wardrobe poles) would work as well - and whether it...

Electrics and a new kitchen - what order and how long?

hi securespark - does that mean that the socket will have to sit 30mm above the draining board and as near to the door frame as possible or does it mean it just can't go there at all as there's not enough distance (only 10cm to the edge of the draining board)? The door is to the left of the sink...

Electrics and a new kitchen - what order and how long?

wow thanks everyone - all really helpful advice - will definitely check out wickes and miele. great til ColJack for the earthing Widdler, there's about 10 cm of wall space between the door and the draining board for the sink - could we maybe fit the socket there? thanks again!

Electrics and a new kitchen - what order and how long?

Any help/thoughts much appreciated. I want to fit a new kitchen - and may build the units myself from scratch or buy from ikea and fit them. It all depends on how long the electrics trades work is going to take. My question is this - how should I plan fitting the new kitchen? We need to...

    Moving hall pendant light

Ok brilliant thanks - so if I wanted to run a light to another part of the hall I could just tap into the JB and add in an extra pendant cable (obviously it would operated on and off from the same switch as the main pendant). thanks again!

Is there an environmentally friendly way to clean a brush?

Hi modern materials - I've used clingfilm for overnight resting but find that it doesn't work for me for longer periods (maybe I don't wrap tight enough or paint too infrequently) - the brushes tend to go hard after a week or so. Growler, thanks I've often wondered if you the white spirit or...

    Moving hall pendant light

Yeah, I do just want to extend the switch cable - but I thought, from the above posts, if I terminate all three existing cables (both feed cables and the switch cable) in a 20 amp junction box and then put in a new cable from the fourth terminal leading to the new rose location, that will do the...

    Moving hall pendant light

Great it's 5 amp - so that's ok. And last last question! A 30amp 4 way JB is "overkill" - so presumably given that it's a 5 amp fuse anything over 5 amp would be fine (but 20 amp would be better cos there's more room to manouever?) thanks heaps again damson :)

    Moving hall pendant light

Thanks again for all your replies - one final question (I hope!) I've bought 1mm twin and earth cable (it says suitable for lighting circuits) - how can I tell if the original cable is the same. Do I check that it's got an earth and measure the diameter? Sorry for the dumb question...

Is there an environmentally friendly way to clean a brush?

Really third eye - wow I didn't know you could do that - whenever I've used a wet brush with an oil based paint it makes the paint go on a bit funny at first - do you just wipe it off on newspaper etc first and then use.?
