    BMW 1 series on Ice

    ASC&T is the worst thing to have on snow and ice. Best advice is to turn it off. I do this with my 323 as last year I was unwise and kept it switched on. The back end just span out whilst I was travelling in a straight line. My neighbour's 3 series did the same and unfortunately span in to the...

    Vehicle modifications/insurance/aftermarket parts

    My BMW was fitted from the factory with 15" alloys. I've upgraded to the next shape M sport 17" which are wider and in my opinion, brings the car more up to date. I contacted the insurance and they simply said "They are still BMW wheels so that's no problem, no extra cost" If you fit another...

    Snow/winter tyres

    Well, gritting is the wrong term, yes, salt would corrode aluminium, but the road type grit getting into the jet engines would ground every single aircraft. They use Urea mixed with warm fine sand spread across the runway which is specifically made to be airplane safe and hence why the cost is...

    Vehicle modifications/insurance/aftermarket parts

    The insurance side of things is only interested in modifications that either improve performance, increase risk of claim by driver or increase the appeal to car theives. If you are fitting standard engine components that are OEM then there is no increase in power, no extra appeal to make the car...

    Snow/winter tyres

    You are confusing the width with height. The 40 relates to the tyre wall height, 40 being quite a low profile and therefore a harsher ride comfort wise. If your car was an ex rally car, it would never have had these tyres fitted during a rally as they are totally unsuitable for the abuse rally...

    re=antifreeze in screenwash?

    I should clarify my ammonia solution. It needs to be pure ammonia. Many supermarkets sell a diluted form so if you then dilute it further, the freezing point will be little over that of water and you will be in a worse state than many high street screen washes.

    Snow/winter tyres

    Trouble is with point 3, you need to check with the insurance as to their own stance on if they are ok to use or if you have to pay a premium or worse, are not allowed modifications. If you take the stance that you are fitting them to manufacturer information so they must be ok, if you have a...

    re=antifreeze in screenwash?

    Check before you buy!!! Many big brand names don't go down that far or do not list the freezing point. Halfords, I understand, have been repackaging their popular 3 for 2 5 litre ones. They used to say -15 or -17, but now say -6 because that is where they start to freeze. I found this out the...

    re=antifreeze in screenwash?

    A suprising number of screenwashes will only stay liquid to -6 degrees and we've been seeing up to -20 in Scotland this year. It may be smelly, but you can add Ammonia which on it's own freezes at -80, so you can dilute it down to about 1 part ammonia to 4 parts water and it'll be good for...

    number plate lights

    Yeah, I'd say it's the earthing on the connectors. I've got a 2008 Focus on 109K miles and I've had to have the numberplate lights replaced twice now because the water kicks up and hangs around there, the metal is cheap and corrodes badly to the point it either rusts and breaks or builds up a...

    webuyanycar.com?

    You will always make more money selling your car privately because your selling to an end user, if you part x with a dealer or an internet company, their intention is to get their money back and a bit of profit to make it worth the effort and keep the company afloat. If you go in expecting to...

    Screen washer jets not working

    Try using fluid with a lower freezing point. The 3 for 2 ready mix from a well known shop is only down to -6 and what happens is it exits the jets, some residue fluid hangs about the jets and is hit by the cold air and freezes, preventing more fluid coming out. You can make up your own fluid...

    van scratched on side very lightly

    T Cut or any scratch remover should get out light marks. A good product, used by the trade and available to retail is Farecla G3 and G10. G3 is a bit harsher for deeper scratches, G10 is for the lighter stuff and finishing off after G3. With the more paste type compounds, use with water...

    which antifreeze to use?

    As they are both modern, then there should not be any real issue about what one to use. It's classic cars that have the big issues with modern 'organic additive' anti freeze.
