    Glowworm Xtrafast 120 Overheating

Just turn the boiler stat down for the time being until you get a boiler engineer to it. If the stat is down it should cycle on and off before overheating. It's probably air, the water cant get round the exchanger quick enough so is overheating. Try bleeding anywhere you have a bleed valve

    Hot water not working.

This could really be a number of things. Valve, stat, programmer. Check if the valve opens and shuts when you call for heat, and see if the cylinder stat clicks when you turn it up or down

    Sound proofing plastic soil pipe

Loft insulation would work, not sure how well though, i know that the sand is most definately the best option. You could build a shelf(for want of a better word) just above the fittings to appliances, then fill to there. So not causing to many problems when doing remedial work.

If like you say you are boxing it in, build your frame and bored nearly to the top and fill it with sand as high as possible, then put the top bit of board on

which system boiler to go with new megaflo?

I would recommend either a worcester, vailant, or alpha Ariston boilers are quite noisy. Advantage of worcester is readily available and relatively cheap Alpha boilers if you get the £120 premiere pack on top will give you a 5 year guarantee and are very quiet.
