Do you have 3 tanks in total then? If not it just sounds like a standard setup. one is to keedp your heating topped up and the other the cylinder. I assume one is larger than the other

Presumably before the pipe gets to the pump from the boiler you a vent and hopefully a cold fill. If you dont have your cold fill there then i assume its on the return. This can sometimes generate negative pressure, and cause air issues. I'm not sure as there is a -/+ side as such

The best thing to check the size is once the pipe is exposed/cut, either use a micrometer that you will obviously have in your pocket or failing that a tape measure. You should just need the outside diameter. Lead lock are self explanitary when you get one slap it on and tighten like compression.

Sorry didn't realise the hot water worked when you swaped the wires. I would put a tester accross the pins on the back of the programmer. Check for continuity between the connections your having problems with.
