best way for a novice to fix this (with photo)

It's lathe and plaster. If plasterboarding the repair then you should cut the old lathes and plaster back to the nearest joist and then cut your plasterboard to size and screw into said joist. You'll then need to skim over the board, feathering into the existing ceiling. I can't see the...

    visible plasterboard joins

The join in the plasterboard and the pattern of the scrim tape is sometimes noticeable through the skim due to the different thickness of the skim coat over these areas. However, you should not be able to feel the join or the scrim tape - if you can it will definately show up when painted. If...

Minor Problem Painting new Plaster (With Pictures)

It's difficult to see properly but when you say the paint has reacted badly, do you mean it's actually flaked away leaving an impression or is it just a little bit see through? I wonder if the plasterer splashed some PVA on the ceiling accidentally after it had been polished. That would stop...

Sorry, I meant for saying he's not all bad. Flaming wouldn't serve any purpose which is why I wouldn't do it. I must have mis-understood why you'd regret saying it. Regards Fred

Paint Rollers - Advice for an amateur please

There's a little tube thingy that fits tightly over the roller and squeezes it out really well when pushed to the other end. I just dunk my roller in a big flexi bucket of water, give it a bit of a clean by hand and then use the tube thingy on it, dunk it, use the tube thingy again from the...

    Dodgy batch of Multi-Finish?

Joe, I'm going to stop replying now because you're starting to look like an even bigger **** than normal and quite frankly, I feel a little bit sorry for you.

    Intensive plastering courses

Ahh, I see. No further questions your honour. Case closed. Did I say how much I've earned? I've made enough thank you. But it's only ever been a part time thing. A hobby, as and when something catches my eye - I don't go hunting properties.

    Dodgy batch of Multi-Finish?

No Joe, second coat is never as thick as the first. My total skim coat is 3mm - 2mm first coat and 1mm second coat. Any more and it'd be far too thick.

    Name that Yak!

LOL, I like it and it probably won't be beaten. How about Yakety (Yak)? Probably not subtle enough. Regards Fred

    Dodgy batch of Multi-Finish?

Christ. Not only is this guy a top plasterer but he's a physics expert too! I know what it was Joe, it was grit, lots of it, bigger than usual, and the forst coat wasn't too thin and hadn't pulled in too much.

The only raw nerve Joe is your persistent negativity, a negativity which may deter some people from joining these forums, or some new members to not return. Yes, I would. If they know what they're doing then why not? I hide nothing Joe. Nothing at all. I tell people what I am. I don't...

    Intensive plastering courses

**** off Joe - go and play with your little cock some more and come back when you've grown out of continuous mastur bation, got yourself a girlfriend or boyfriend and grown up a little. Please. You're really not wanted round here. You have very little (if any) positive input, seem to do...

    Dodgy batch of Multi-Finish?

Nope, it definately wasn't on too thin. If that's the case, how come it didn't happen when I layed the first coat on the first wall? It only happened when I layed the second coat on, from a new mix from a new bag. That's whengrit started to appear.

    Intensive plastering courses

Go for it - I did one last year and then practiced, practiced and practiced some more. I then practiced a bit more too. And more still. As you've already pointed out in a round about way, it's not as simple as doing the course and being fully competent in four or five days but it's a basis on...

    LOL

His mates got him to see how long he can hold a 25 kilo bag of board finish above his head for. He lifted it up and then one of the lads came up behind him and cut the bag. Classic trick usually used on new labourers. Regards Fred

    screwfix

Mee too. In fact, I've built up quite a good relationship with the folks in Birkenhead. I use Chster more now though and they're not as cheerful or efficient but they still do what they're supposed to. I find the pencils great too. A normal long pencil won't stay behind my ear but the short...

    Dodgy batch of Multi-Finish?

Evenin' all, Had a weird one today. Following on from my disaster job post yesterday, I duly returned this morning to finish the job. Big ceiling and two walls left. Ceiling went up fine. Mixed up what I had left in an open bag and did the first hit on one of the walls. No problems...
