How to flatten walls in prep for large tiles

LOL! At least you tried eh. Might be easier just to take it right back to brick and dot n dab some boards up. Regards Fred

    Disaster job

Cheers Noseall, I hadn't overtrowelled the bonding coat - it's the easiest thing in the world to lay on a thin coat without troweling too much. TBH, I hate scratching bonding to key it up for finishing but do sometimes have to do it. I finished the disaster job today - YAY! I feel a...

    Unreasonable expectations

When going out to price up a job and see old uneven walls I always advise the client that I can skim the walls which will improve their appearance in that it will give them a nice smooth finish but the uneveness won't be completely hidden. Yes, the effect can be reduced a little but for a...

How to flatten walls in prep for large tiles

Like Richard, I usually get most of my plaster from B&Q. Cheapest place around and my local builders merchant won't match the price. OK, so it's only 70p a bag more but when you're going through 20+ bags a week it adds up to a lot. I find that the stuff in B&Q is usually longer dated than...

    Disaster job

Cheers folks, Onion, it's textured but not Artex, just a textured skim coat so it's not down to a lack of a decent coat of paint. I've never experienced bubbling with artex before though - the only time I fell foul of Artex was when it sucked the water out of my plaster almost as soon as the...

    Disaster job

Evenin' All, Had a disaster job today - 5 x 4 textured ceiling painted with silk emulsion. The texture was quite deep so I figured I'd stick a thin coat of bonding over the top prior to skimming. So, bonding mixed, I layed it on no problems, nice and flat. Went away for a while and did...

    plaster boards which way out?

Oh, one other thing, when I say he cut them the wrong way round, I still couldn't understand why he put them up the wrong way. FFS, the two walls were a mirror image of each other so I don't see why he couldn't have just swapped the boards intended for wall 1 onto wall 2 and vice versa. When I...

    plaster boards which way out?

I skimmed two walls this week where a muppet (not a dig at you fastneattrowel - this guy puts stud walls up for a living and should know better but he cut them all the wrong way round) had put every one of them up back to front with the brown side facing out. The only difference I noticed was...

    cracking around chases

Did you PVA the chases before plastering? If not, chances are the background has sucked the water out too quickly. When did you do it? I shouldn't imagine the cracks will be a problem once you've skimmed as long as the browning has adhered properly. Regards Fred

    BABY OIL

Shampoo the hair BEFORE wetting it. Loads of shampoo, rub it in well. Then rinse and repeat on the hair which is now wet.

    Skimming external corner without beads

Hi tjg, I'd toyed with the idea of stop beads but there is too much of a lip (visible from inside the opening) for me to be happy with the finish. I usually only use them when they will be hidden by architrave or something. I think I'll take a chance on skimming up to a piece of hardboard and...

    Skimming external corner without beads

Cheers Noseall, I'd been thinking of something similar, using a piece of skirting or even just hardboard so it overhangs the edge which I can then skim up to although I don't really want to damage the plaster in the opening. Could do without having to patch it, no matter how small. The...

    Skimming external corner without beads

Evenin' all, Been away for a week and come home all nice and relaxed and ready for a hectic three weeks. Starting a job tomorrow, hall, stairs & landing and a living room. Hall, stairs and landing fairly straight forward although I'm a little worried about being able to lay it on fast...

    CEILING SIZE

Hi Brist, Largest I've done so far is 5 x 4 metres and it was OK although I was playing catch up for a while. Actually, for some reason I found it easier than my own kitchen ceiling which is 6 x 3. Total area is less but maybe it was the length I didn't get on with on my kitchen ceiling. My...

    Ceiling height

Hi Brist, Due to the depth of the patern i figured that three coats one after the other would be difficult to finish satisfactorily as the skim would be too thick so i decided to apply the first coat the night before, making sure i flattened it adequately. I then went back the next day and...

    Ceiling height

Aye, I've considered those things Noseall but to be honest, they scare the poo outta me! Also, I was plastering a ceiling in a room where they want to keep the carpet so I'd sheeted up with nice big thick plastic sheeting - not what yo ant to walk around on when on stilts!

    Ceiling height

Evenin' all, Boy am I worn out! I skimmed an artexed ceiling today, quite a deep pattern but with limited high spots to scrape off it was a three coat jobby. First coat on to level the recesses and then the usual two coats. Anyway, the ceiling was lower than usual, not sure exactly what...
