    Tanking a cellar

You need a tanking kit. You paint the stuff on the wall and THEN replaster. If it's a damp proof course you're thinking of then you inject the chemical into the mortar course and then replaster, adding rendamix to the sand and cement mix. Regards Fred

Advice on starting up in business as painter and decorator.

Absolutely - and you'll never stop earning either. One thing I've been very careful about is ensuring I don't take on any jobs I can't handle. However, rather than informing the cliet that I don't think I can do the job, I inform them that it's a job that takes longer than days I have free in...

Advice on starting up in business as painter and decorator.

Hi Tina, Firstly, welcome to the forum. Well, as a female tradesperson you'll surely do well - there's not many around although I think there are a couple of female painters and decorators in these forums. There are many things you need to consider. The training course, is it an...

    Chasing Copper pipes

In my own kitchen and in some bathrooms (obviously after discussing with the client) I've done recently I've done as noseall suggests, stopping the edge of the board either side of the pipework. Then, rather than filling the void, I've simply tiled over the recess (or in other peoples bathrooms...

How much should skimming my lounge cost?

That's a decent sized room! I'd tend to agree with Brist and Joe here that about £450. However, your plasterer may be busy and may not really want the job so has priced it higher than he would ordinarily do. regards Fred

    painting over previously papered walls?

Hi Mr Landlord, I'm only a plasterer, a painter and decorator would probably be better placed to answer the question but I was talking from personal experience. The only options I can think of are ether lining the walls before painting or, but I've tried this without success, scraping...

Is this bad plastering look at my pics

Jesus! That's a shocking plastering job! Get him back and make him rectify it. Well, make him get a proper plasterer in. I would've skimmed the whole ceiling for less than that! Regards fred

    Plastering trowels

I have two for finishing, both Marshalltown, both were pre-worn but are now nicely worn in through use. One is just the normal marshalltown durasoft 14" and the other is the permashape. I use the permashape when I need to use the trowel end on to get into tighter spaces. It hasn't bowed at...

Can i paint straight onto new plaster?

Cheers all, I'm relieved that Vinyl Matt can be used after misting with Supermatt! My wife just went out at the weekend and spent £60 on 10 litres of Dulux Trade Vinyl Matt - the stuff that's mixed on the machine so it can't be taken back. £60! The white stuff is only £20 for 5 litres so why...

Can i paint straight onto new plaster?

It was ME who plastered the room! I know there are blemishes there because I'd seen a couple before painting but the Dulux Trade Supermatt I used seemed to mask them wonderfully. I've found them now though but am going to shine a flourescent light down the wall to find any others that may be...

Can i paint straight onto new plaster?

Hi Spice, nice answer! And it's raised a couple of questions so I'm gonna hijack this thread to ask 'em. You say don't use Vinyl. Obviously for the mist coat Vinyl's not good. But can one stick a vinyl on after it's been misted? Or should the net two coats be supermatt too? I know supermatt...

Can i paint straight onto new plaster?

Water down your first coat of paint. Instructions will be on the tin although I usualy thin it out more than instructed. As an example, Dulux Trade Supermatt states 1 part water 3 parts paint. I find this far too thick so usually water down half and half. Goes on much better. Regards Fred

    Lining Paper or Not

Are you wanting them painted afterwards or papering? If papering then I can understand why he recommends lining. It'll stop the edges of your new paper curling up over time. If painting though then there's no need to line. Regards Fred

Re-skimming over a new shoddy skim

Oh and on that second coat of PVA, let it go tacky and then skim.

Re-skimming over a new shoddy skim

Hi Ray, Don't know about the hardwall situation but for the re-skimming you shouldn't need to score it to provide a key. PVA with a 5/1 solution of water / PVA. Let this dry fully and then coat again with a 3/1 solution. Then skim away. What exactly is up with the work? It surely can't...

    Normal plasterboard sufficient in bathroom?

You'd be better with moisture resistant boards around the shower area to be honest - I assume you only want to do this once so the additional cost is small compared to the long term benefits. Alternatively you could tank the shower area prior to tiling. Tanking kits are available for around...

    sizing newly plastered walls

I've never used plaster sealer myself. I usually use Dulux Trade Supermatt. The tin says 1 part water 3 part paint but I usually mix it half and half without problem - the wall sucks it up. Sounds like you've possibly applied too much paint which is what's caused the drips. When you...
