why not set it to hibernate after 2 hours of inactivity? Then it's drawing hardly any power, you're not needlessly spinning fans, hard drives are powered down, and the temperature of your PC case drops significantly. The longer you run PC hardware, the sooner you're going to have to replace it

Sounds like an accumulation of crud inside your PC was possibly stopping a cooling fan from spinning properly, causing the motherboard to shut down when it reached a critical temperature.

If your internet connection is usually ok, but for a couple of days has been slow and unusable, yo may wish to try resetting your router (assuming you're not on a dial up modem). Either restart it from the router admin screen, or remove the power from it for 30s, then plug back in.
