    Concrete over concrete

Hi may I suggest also that you consider- if the path is longish- putting in expansion strips every so often.

    Lowering the Kitchen Ceiling

You need the exoerts if course- but could you not place 3" by 2" battons between the RSJs and also to the walls either side of the RSJs. If you set them in to the bottom flap of the rsj and wedge them against this with a block next to the ceiling. You could use a wooden wall plate each side of...

Well if hard things bounce why don't my eggs? mmm :( Is the answer you're looking for something to do with the law -- 'Every force must have an equal and opposite force' So that's what bust me eggs!

    heat pumps

Guess the figures on my post are £25k and £17k- silly me  I read of all the options for generating power, and I think there needs to be more information for domestic installations and costs, worked out so that we understand correctly whats what. But we should have blogs about ideas-...

    heat pumps

Just seen a program on television about a guy in wales- where the wind blows well. He had a lot of hassle getting his fan-on-a stick installed. He claims the cost was £2500, if I've got that right, and with government help worked out at £1700 to himself. Repay would take 17years he says as...

Laying patio over concrete slab patio

Certainly all good advice here, but I personally would be worried on- What would happen if the area got waterlogged in winter to some extent and then freezing occured, you might get uneven lifting of the top layer of slabs- after all that work in getting them flat.

    Removing fence spikes

Had a good tip given to me which might work here also. Try and work a whole bucket of water in and around the concrete. Retire for the night- then next morning the whole lot will pop out like a cork. :) Do try it and see.

    best solution for downlighters

We've had an 80 watt flourescent strip light for 30 years. It's magnificent in the kitchen, and it's 'greeeen'. I'd never want anything else- except a small under cub light maybe. Think of the planet chaps- we've got the whole world on that- why are you so different- - On another planet? :)...

    Using the darn thing

Thanks steve- tried 'wiki-' map on your post. Dosen't seem to work around the midlands- maybe they haven't completed the site yet- unless my pc's got the hump. Google's earth I believe is popular- must try that when I've got time/journey. Buzy with turkey for a bit!

    Using the darn thing

Thanks a lot, empip, looks like just the ticket and not a bad price- has to be a bit above the rubbishy maps- and there's lots of those about. I've not seen it yet, but I will find it- make a little pressey :) I usually have to buy my own! I'll try google earth as well- haven't yet been onto...

    Using the darn thing

Hi! I which I could find a good British road map- one with clear up-to-date junctions. Enlarged and on a separate page from all the wiggle bits. Can anyone point me in the right direction before I get lost- or stuck up a railway track, Come to think of it, that might be a quicker way! I find...

    fireplace install questions

B-B, Looks to me that the top piece on the 'smoke shelf' should be at the front-(at a 180 degree turn and put upside down to as it is now I think). Do it quick before it sets. It should resemble a 'bend' in the flue. Also I think there should be another expansion slot in the base piece, and a...

    Gas pipe to boiler

Me thinks you need a gas installation engineer- not a glass bending artist! Why has nobody mentioned the prevailing gas pressure- is this fixed all over the country? Sounds like it would be cheaper to bump up the pressure and fit a 10 mm pipe

    Wood colour query

Thanks, David P. I really appreciate your information, together with the Rustin web address which may be useful to refer to on occasions- but you have answered what I needed to know on this query. The wood is 4foot*3inch*4inch which I should be able to treat ok Many regards. :D

    Wood colour query

Hi guys Just bought a piece of sapele which seems a bit too red in colour for what I want, but is good wood. Query is, is there any way to lighten the colour a little before a clear varnish is applied. I know that the varnish or some other finishes will darken things up usually. In advance...

I would say this project needs re-designing with professional/better advice. My advice- don't do it that way!

    Chimney Breast Removal

I removed mine long ago- and had to replace it sometime later- I couldn't stand the unfeatured look of the room downstairs. Also I considered this thing about future costs and convenience of a 'burn anything' setup. I have done other things also which would not pass regs today- even if the...

How thick is the partywall for a semi-detached built in 20s?

If the chimney breast has been removed, that is a bad move- soundwise. The breast gives stability and rigidity to the whole wall and breaks up sound resonances within the room concerned. Without this the sound in that room will tend to be amplified somewhat. (the bathroom sound!) Of course...
