Putting up plasterboard for sloping ceiling

Yep, my bad. You can dot&dab a wall with two securing screws but not the ceiling. And the props I suggested are extension support rod's

    Conservatory / window insulation

New glass is cheaper than a whole new conservatory! Depends what you want it to look like and how much you want to spend

    Laying hardcore

By layering you get a better compaction. Ideally you should do it every 2-4". By only doing a top coat the bottom of the base will not be as compact. But depends on size of unit they will be using and the purpose of the hardcore. If its a drive I'd say something or risk it failing in a few years

Putting up plasterboard for sloping ceiling

Just screw to wood or dot and dab. I have props that can adjust to hold the board up. It may be a small room, but they are the worst! No room to move! Are you using handy boards? Take it you are plastering.

    Conservatory / window insulation

Air filled double glazing has a u value of about 2.2, dg with argon filled unit has a u value about 1.8. Triple glazing will have a u value about 1.2-1.4, and argon filled around .8! Bear in mind that the u value of your walls will be about .3 So remember if you put triple argon filled windows...

    Re-roof question

Having tackled my own clay roof, I'd say its difficult to take off and relay looking good. The clay tiles have 'cooked' over many years and form a kind of jigsaw puzzle with each tile being a unique shape/size. As long as its your roof that's been relayed and is water tight, I wouldn't worry. If...

Best method of creating a small retaining wall

I'd follow what you've already got tbh so it all matches. It's the easier option!

Best method of creating a small retaining wall

With a small retainer like you are after, you have a lot of choice. The wall will not be holding much weight, so the questions are: what finish are you after how much do you want to spend how much time do you have In a garden, personally, for the money and effort just use sleepers. But...

    Paint or replace with UPVC?

Wood is an excellent insulator, and the windows are already double glazed. The issue clearly isn't about efficiency or appeal (some value wood for aesthetic appeal over plastic). The issue is simple ease of maintenance versus money. As this is a DIY forum, I'd say buy a decent tower (having...

    Block Paving HELPP

Yes, a new drive or increasing an existing drive more than 5m2 (I think its that little) will require either to be permeable or have planning consent. Sorry, I don't know the current legislation if its a straight relaying an existing driveway. But if there is an issue, simply install a drainage...

    Block Paving HELPP

The layers (hardcore, mortar and blocks) help to cushion the weight. The overall depth is a factor as is each layer. Anything less than 250mm depth bedding and you'll struggle. How deep the mortar is is open to a bit of playing about. I would keep it to at least 50mm personally, and on top of...

    Block Paving HELPP

Hello Kent, Laying on sand means that a compactor makes good all the bricks with a universal force (depending on your compactor it can be between 1-2 ton per sq foot). Personally I don't think you will get it any closer to level/straight by eye/hand. And there is a bit of skill with laying in...

    Growing grass over old asphalt...help!

I'd second the drainage point. Use a stake and lump hammer or garden fork. What about another 4" of soil? Anything you do it will be labour intensive. Good luck

    office conversion

I'd think the gravel would be okay! Its difficult to say the cause of the damp...is there a damp proof course, is it used as presently, any ventilation etc etc Don't bother digging down around the wall, the damp is probably because there isn't a damp proof course installed. Extra cement...

    retaining wall question.

Personally I'd say ensure you have weep holes but there's no point using bitumen on the reverse. But if your are concerned do it and add the injection dpc perhaps?
