    Bathroom extractor fan

I've not got any suggestions for a unit, but I'd suggest checking the airflow of the room. Most people don't like the large gap at the bottom of bathroom doors, that building reg's ask for. It helps the airflow. just a thought!

Garden Office Build Thread- Start to finish with pics!

Hi, I was thinking of doing something similar to this project, but slightly bigger! Could you give me any pointers about; Does the structure need to be a set distance from the property line? Is the height or dimensions limited by reg's? I've got my eye on a small barn 10x6m that will fit...

    Non fading block paving

The majority will be cheap concrete blocks. They fade and if left , expose a nasty pebble effect. Look for clay pavers, they wont fade. The downsides are they cost more, and can allow for algae or moss to grow (whereas cement does a better job of killing it)

Incompetent ponders feasibility of DIY log burner install

Yep, there's some finer points like 1) size of vent to provide a draft for the fire. If its an old fire, mine was, there will be a vent already under the hearth. Id suggest using that. 2) having carbon monoxide sensors. Mine is wired to the house alarm! 3) step change in hearth and...

Incompetent ponders feasibility of DIY log burner install

Sorry, forgot the other question...yes you can just render. I did mine with 3 sand, one cement and 1/2 hydrated lime. Its like rock. I also read about using pink plaster board, but they are a 'one off' fire protection. Once they've been exposed to extreme heat once they are supposed to be...

Incompetent ponders feasibility of DIY log burner install

A flue should also be swept, quarterly for wood, yearly for everything else I think. And yes chimney fires are bad, my neighbour had one. They're easy to spot, like a scene from that horror flick fog. The only advantage I see of a flue is when you're not 100% about the integrity of the chimney...

Incompetent ponders feasibility of DIY log burner install

If you have an old class a chimney (should have by sounds of it) get a pro to test it. The flue will zap all the heat you'd expect from the chimney breast. I have a flue inside my chimney, when it gets warmer Ill be taking it out! But I would knock out your fireplace, then render it (fireboard...

Garden retaining for tree protection area

Did the council say your couldn't build brick and mortar, I'd assume it's because of potential root damage/impairment, but clarify with them first. I'd also ask how far the wall needed to be from the tree. If its a root system thing the council wont want deep footings, how about checking if you...

    Anyone got any ideas...

Bit right field, but how about a dryer condenser trap for internal tumble dryer's??? Haven't got a clue how effective they are or even how they work!

    multi fuel inset

As long as the shelf isn't really close to source of heat (I'm sure there'll be ref's about it'll but I don't know them, sorry!) I'm sure it'll be fine

    multi fuel inset

On second reading, if its a 'fake' shelf you are installing, not a lintel as long as you are sure its not coated in any flammable you're good. I've done extensive research and testing into putting a tv on my chimney breast with a fire (and flu lining). I've found the heat travels out from the...

    multi fuel inset

I have a log/coal burner. When we originally prep for the fire we installed a sleeper lintel, which looked amazing. But as soon as the fire installer came he pointed out some ref's, basically you're not allowed a wood sleeper and most have a 'fake' hanging shelf on the outside of the chimney. I...

    1m tall retaining garden wall

Hello, first post so be gentle! I'm an moderate level diy'er with support of a master plaster/general builder as a dad, bricklayer for an uncle and property developer for a brother, ok I'm the weakest link  Id like some reassurances from other's if possible. I'm doing the wall myself...
