    locking bolts for french windows

If the screws came with the product - then they will have been tested along with the bolts and housings. If they needed larger screws - they would be supplied with them. I wouldn't worry - 4 of these with a mortice lock is going to take a fair bit of punishment. Anyone that keen on making an...

    locking bolts for french windows

What about fixing mortice bolts to the top of the doors, and leaving the push bolts on the bottom ? Are the french doors outward or inward opening? If outward, then I'd also consider fitting hinge bolts to prevent the hinges being drilled and the doors lifted.

    Police advise letterbox cage

Still easier to pick than a "proper" mortice lock.

    Police advise letterbox cage

I've never understood people who fit MPT's to hardwood doors, thus making them as secure as a UPVC door - ie NOT secure. Locksmiths prefer to open euro cylinders over mortice locks for a reason!

    upvc lock entry

£85 I'd be supplying the euro as well !!!!!! Depends on area, but budget around £50 for a gain entry on a UPVC. Mortice lockout slightly more.

    Portable door lock help please

I'd be asking the landlord if he will provide contents insurance for the entire property then. It's usually down to each tenant to insure their own property, but insurers often stipulate the room must be secured.

remove a upvc door strip. euro lock

The retaining screw will be in-line with the bottom of the cylinder (the narrow section). The screw head will be the largest on the strip.

remove a upvc door strip. euro lock

You don't need to remove the strip. Just remove the screw retaining the cylinder (its in-line with the botom of the cylinder), key into the cylinder and turn it a few degrees left/right whilst pushing the cylinder from the other side. This will retract the cam and allow the cylinder to be removed.

Lock security - key in or out ?

Leaving keys in mortice locks is great (for me as a locksmith), but probably a bad idea if you value your possessions. On the subject of fire safety, leave keys nearby the door, but out of reach and sight.

Mulitpoint lock for UPVC front door - BS rated?

BS3621:1998 is also dated, and newer standards have been published since. Good advice above - speak to your insurer and explain that you have a UPVC door. Whatever is agreed, get it in writing.

    Fitting a Safe to floorboards.

If its a cheapo, then I wouldn't worry too much about securing it - they'll know how to break it open. Securing it to the floorboards - a few seconds with a prybar will have it loose. Securing it to plasterboard - as above. If you're stuck for ideas, then try to screw it into a joist or...

Where to find little red plastic window lock keys

Then place the onus back on the landlord to either supply more keys, or replace them. I'm sure you could state a case for it being a fire/safety hazard if you have to runa round the house to find the only key to open a window in an emergency - particularly if you happen to be upstairs and the...

Where to find little red plastic window lock keys

I haven't come across this particular lock, but I assume it's securing a sliding sash window. If I were you, I'd save a lot of hassle and replace them with some decent models.

    Thumb locks for upvc doors.

Yes its possible, but not recommended unless you have additional letterbox security fitted - it's too easy to manipulate the thumbturn open through the letterbox. Take the double euro cylinder out, and insert a thumbturn cylinder. Make sure you get the correct size cylinder - use the one...

    Enlarging lock mortice

A sharp wide chisel is the best method for enlarging the mortice, and shouldn't take more than a few minutes - don't forget the faceplate will cover any unevenness on the mortice, so spend more time getting the recess for the faceplate neat. Try to keep the chisel flat to the mortice sides...

My lock has just broken, front door k******d, please help

£500 - sounds like he didn't want the job. Replacing a MPT mechanism should cost £150-£200 max, and thats for labour and materials, and assuming most expensive mechanism. Only problem with the ERA, is that you'll probably need to change the keep positions on the frame, and this can look...

uPVC euro locks are pathetic security - so is it possible to

JohnD - you've forgotten to mention the Alsation inside the house, and the trip wires connected to flash-bangs at both front and rear doors.
