    Burgler

As I've already said, the burglery rate in US is half that of UK because there is a good chance of being shot dead. The message would soon get around that it's not worth it here. The shooting of burglers can be viewed as a cleansing of society, and when I look at the Tony Martin case it...

    Improved earth

Wouldn't it be better to first try to identify the appliance that may be causing the rcd to trip? Old washing machine sounds a bit suspicious and if there are any water leaks near the motor that may be the problem.

    Aluminium double glased door handle

A pic would help Derek, there are so many different designs. I repaired a patio door handle mechanism last year. There was a handle on each side and two 6mm screws went through the inside handle and door to screw into a thread in the outside handle. The screwheads were not visible on the inside...

    Burgler

The law hasn't been changed just clarified, and the CPS and ACPO have issued a leaflet explaing the situation. Here's an extract. You MUST remember to say you felt intimidated and in fear for your safety. If you do shoot them do NOT admit to smiling as you slowly point the gun at their head...

    3/4" olives that don't seal....

Graham, the olive should seal on the fitting without any sealant. If you've got a problem then the leak is not between the olive and pipe, it's where the olive touches the chamfer on the fitting, so this is where a smear of silicone is needed. LSX is a fine product but it is still a silicone...

    faulty mitre

Ish: I bought one from Wickes a few years ago but it did look exactly like the Screwix one. The Wickes one did take 7" skirting, which is what I wanted it for, but I was disappointed in the accuracy and took it back. You lay the skirting flat and set the blade over at 45°. The blade was too...

Rider: Good point, and I don't have the breakdown. I suppose some may be heart attacks, suicide or just old age.

    coving

I recently bought this one from a Sunday market for £3.99(new). I use 127mm but it will take 135mm as well.

    coving

It's not necessary to get the angles absolutely spot-on. You fill any discrepancy with artex, feather it into the coving and sand smooth with fine paper. You can get a nice sharp corner on the external. I'm just doing some now and use a standard mire box.

replacibg wooden panels in concrete posts

I've just done some on my own. I've got some building trestles with the planks about 4' above ground. I screwed a handle on the centre vertical batten just above half-way and I could lift the panel myself and slot it into posts. Do check the measurements first because sometimes the slats stick...

    Soldiers on trial!

On average about 50 people die in police custody in this country every year. If you are in custody you have to expect a bit of a kicking. The police get away with it so why shouldn't the British soldiers?

    Asbestos and textures

Hang on a min Thermo, this asbestos is funny stuff alright. I had an uncle who worked in the asbestos industry all his life and the post-mortem showed he was full of the stuff. It took three months to cremate him.

    3/4" olives that don't seal....

No need to overtighten them, a smear of silicone is ok on the olive.
