    New shower cable

OK, well he hasn't called me this evening to tell me what he's done or to ask for payment. Something doesn't seem right. We're in a situation now where we want to try and preserve our friendship with him and his family, but we need to question the quality of his work. We don't think we can...

    New shower cable

To clarify, the fusebox has a cover which screws on top of what you see in that photo. Because the MCB is bulkier the cover has had to have a rectangle cut out of it to let the MCB fit. If that makes sense. I haven't looked inside the pull cord switch. I'm worried it could be a bit dangerous...

    New shower cable

UPDATE I came home tonight having not heard from the electrician. Wife hasn't heard either. Our fuse board cover has been cut so that an MCB can be fitted. The MCB says WYLEX B40 on it. The pull cord switch hasn't been replaced. Is the MCB good enough or is an RCD required also...

Vauxhall Vectra wiring - trailer socket

The Vauxhall supplied plug is somewhere near £50. I'm told by the company I bought the towbar and wiring from that my year of Vectra shouldn't need any special kit so the method I'm trying to use is suitable for a DIY effort. The company have years of fitting experience using the same kit as...

    New shower cable

We never got any certificate/paperwork, but then I haven't paid him yet! Could it be that he's thinking that a simple replacement of the cable is not something that needs to be certified/notified/regulated etc? But, changing fuses would require that and therefore it becomes a bigger and more...

How to make a lamp/wiring test probe

Related to my other Q regarding Vectra towbar wiring. I want to make a simple device which will let me check which wire in my car's loom does what function. So, it'll be a bulb with a wire and clip attached to each pole. If I clip one end to the wire I want to test, and the other to earth...

    New shower cable

Ah yes, RCD. I meant to ask about that. The CU has an ON/OFF breaker. What else is required with the installation of this new cable?

    New shower cable

Ban - I must admit I'm not full of confidence in his work. However, the wife and I discussed this last night and we said there are only 2 possibilities here: 1. He knows exactly what he's supposed to be doing, but isn't telling us the correct information. Maybe it's because he want to see us...

Vauxhall Vectra wiring - trailer socket

Hi folks Recently fitted a towbar to my 1999 Vectra estate. No problems there. Got a simple wiring kit with it and a load of Scotchloks. On inspection under the boot floor I found what seemed to be a socket for trailer wiring so I thought I could probably use the Scotchloks and splice into...

    New shower cable

Hey, I'm only speaking as I find. I appreciate what you're implying though and I can only say that maybe it's the warmer weather that means we aren't needing to turn the shower up so high. Or, the shower has a problem. We didn't replace it. But, the fusebox cover is getting very warm after...

    New shower cable

Update. I decided that my electrician friend is the professional and this is far too complicated for me to fit into the little time I have. So, rather than try and understand it all and still get him to do it, I just thought I'd let him go ahead. As far as I know, he has replaced the 6mm...

    New shower cable

Folks Thanks for so many replies. I think that someone somewhere has added their own anecdote to the thread and this might have caused some confusion - well, it's confused me more. The CU we have is indeed an old WYLEX. We live in an ex council house which was built around 1970-1975 I...

    New shower cable

Thanks eric. I've made it very clear to him that I don't want him to do anything to cut the price unless it's legal and keeping within the rules, regs and recommendations. So it could be that finding a 45A breaker for our fuse box isn't possible? I'll check with him on that. Maybe we'll...

    New shower cable

The technical info I've given is just relayed from the electrician that quoted. I suggested that we'd want a 10.5kW unit in future and the 10mm² was recommended. (Yep, I should have said cross-sectional area previously, not diameter). Actually, that diameter was recommended for our 8.5kW shower...

    New shower cable

OK, what does that mean? What needs to be upgraded? The fuse box is fine I believe, although a breaker-type fuse would be a sensible option but wouldn't need to be a complete replacement of the consumer unit. So, the only other components are the cable, the pull cord and the shower itself...

    New shower cable

Hi We've had a few problems with our shower electrics. It's an over-the-bath type, Redring I think, and it is probably an 8.5kW unit. It's very old so will get replaced at some point anyway. Anyway, the problem is that after prolonged use (i.e. when 2 or 3 people use the shower...

Installing an outside tap - supply issue

Well, that's that then. I wouldn't have liked the appearance of the pipe running down the wall, and I'd have been concerned about leaks - hadn't even thought of frost issues but that would also be a concern. So, I need an outdoor tap like this -...
