Self employed, Pro/cons of reg as Ltd company

So by including petrol the VAT liabilty has been reduced from £8.33 to £6.66. So now incorporate all the other overheads he can claim the VAT back on, and that amount is reduced further still. I appreciate that there are many scenarios, but I still don't see that VAT registration is always...

Self employed, Pro/cons of reg as Ltd company

Sorry, but I don't get why fuel and other overheads can be disregarded. In the example both traders use £10 of petrol to get to the Customer. Non-vat has to pay £10 for his fuel, VAT gets 20% back so in effect only pays £8 (although may not see that until 3 months down the line) That seems...

Self employed, Pro/cons of reg as Ltd company

I've always struggled to see why being VAT registered should make a trader more expensive. Yes you have to add 20% to the bill, but you get 20% back on fuel, capital outlay (vans etc). Surely that allows you to work for a cheaper daily rate, which when subjected to VAT makes you comparable...

But be warned with a Hippo bag - if you fill it with soil they state it should only be 2/3rds full (due to the weight)

Exposing neighbour's wall when demolishing and rebuilding...

The party wall act is also applicable depending on the distance to adjacent buildings and whether your foundations would be deeper than your neighbours - it is not just about shared walls. There used to be a good PDF on it on on of the government websites - communities or something or other...

Exposing neighbour's wall when demolishing and rebuilding...

I'm happy to be shot down in flames by someone with more knowledge, but I really can't see that it's your responsibility. Following the PWA means that next door either give you 'permission' to build without any hassle, or Surveyors are appointed and the condition of your neighbours property...

    Baxi Solo 3 PF - Won't re-start once run

Here's the solution in case anyone else is stuck. Boiler needed a new APS. The old one was sticking open, and the boiler wouldn't relight. Leaving the boiler off overnight was allowing the switch to unseize. (According to the BG engineer)

    Price for fence erecting.

Andy is right, you really need a selection of quotes from people who have seen the job. There are many variables; is the run fairly level or will it need to be stepped. Are you replacing an existing fence meaning the original post foundations might be in the way? Tree roots causing problems...

    apprenticeships are like gold dust

It might be worth having a look at some larger utility companies, such as the local water authority. I did my apprenticeship with Thames Water and it was really good. I did Mechanical / Electrical, but they also did Electrical / Electronic. They also paid for 4 years of college (and then 4...

    Baxi Solo 3 PF - Won't re-start once run

I've been doing some work in an (empty) rental property. I told the owners that I would leave the heating ticking over to try and prevent any problems. Yesterday I had the heating running for an hour or so, with the Programmer 'On', however when I switched the Programmer to 'Auto' the...

    B&Q trade Card - WARNING

It's only the stuff in the catalogue that's cheaper. If it's in the ctalogue and in the store you'll get the discount. If it's only in the store there's no discount. Most of the paint isn't in the catalogue, so there's no discount, but that's no different to the Trade Discount card scheme...

Newly installed combi boiler causing pipe leaks

OK, I'm not a Plumber so have no interest in talking the job up. Firstly I can understand your suspicions about whether a pressure test was carried out, but you state you are an Engineer and must be aware of situations where an item has been tested / used to it's limit without failure, but on...

Newly installed combi boiler causing pipe leaks

Surely even if a low pressure system had been retained the pipes would have continued to corrode under the floor and would have failed in time. That may have happened years down the line, but I doubt anyone would be looking to blame the installer.

Papering to external corner - Peeling?

I'm looking to paper a wall on my stairs, but one end of the 'run' is an external corner - i.e: painted wall to corner, then paper from corner. Obviously this edge is going to be susceptible to peeling particulalry due to traffic and children - is there any tips for protecting it? Thanks,

How much for all this work?

Davie, I have to agree that 3 quotes is the way to go - or more details (such as room measurements for the floor). I'd always try and give a ball park figure if I could, but that's a little vague. For instance do you need new architrave with the doors and frames? Is the plaster around...

Cables through garage ceiling - fire break

I have to bring a selection of cables through my garage ceiling - 3" of celotex and then plasterboard. Is there a best practice method of doing this? Will running the cables through the insulation require some de-rating? I had thought about running the cables through a piece of...
