    Builders waste

Depends on your local council. No trade waste allowed at our local tip (not even if you pay). Van owners can get a permit for 12 trips a year for personal waste. Only option is to go to a commercial waste centre (who have a minimum charge of a tonne) or get a skip on your drive. There's a...

    leaflets

As others have said they sound a bit pricey. I'm sure I paid £80-90 for 1500, although that was a few years ago now. I've had a lot of luck with leaflets. If your a new business and have some spare days then delivering leaflets is no hardship - and you can tailor where you deliver to...

Hair passing through shower waste and blocking pipe. Fix???

In fairness you suggested cutting clearance FOR the lugs. But the lugs don't need any clearance as they are meant to fit into the waste to hold the chrome trim piece in place.

Low HW pressure upstairs... Tried allsorts...

If the HW feed to the ensuite goes up into he loft, across, then down into the shower there's a chance for air to get trapped at the high point. Is there an air release point in the pipework in the loft?

I must have a leak but I can't find it...

Leaking pipe under the floor? (I had this last week - nothing to see because it was under the ground floor floorboards, but it looked lik a swimming pool down there!)

    B & Q - Trade point

Tradepoint in Farnborough guarentee that they won't be more expensive than B&Q, so if there's a promotion on the shelf than you should get that price. The Farnborough store can be good in that if they haven't got it in stock, but it is on the shelf, they'll give you the Tradepoint price...

To hell with Party Wall Act??

If there's the possibility that you'll need to spend £1k to follow the PWA process, is it worth offering next door £500 for their agreement. My neighbours didn't have a problem with our build, but I still gave them £250 for the inconvenience - money well spent!

Neighbour proposing to site boiler flue within my boundary

I'd be worried about letting it go ahead, with the thought of making her life difficult afterwards. Once it's there who knows what will happen? Are the Police going to pursue it as an act of criminal damage? Maybe. Are Gas Safe or the HSE going to take retrospective action; indeed can Gas...

    Leaking velux

The Velux instructions also show that the felt should be sealed to the side of the window, using their own under felt collar or standard felt. This prevents any water that does get under the tiles from coming inside. I know that the builders that installed my Velux's didn't bother and just...

    Bizarre leak - totally confused.

It happened at my brothers house. Leaky ball valve allowed the tank to overflow, overflow pipework was damaged so water leaked from the loft, through the middle of a stud wall (so no water to see on first floor), and then through the ceiling into the lounge. It's worth a look. Using the...

    Boundary wall dispute - HELP!

I would suggest that for 4" it could end up being an expensive exercise. Lawyers aren't cheap. Proving that he's nicked the 4" is the difficult bit. Land Registry plans aren't accurate enough to measure that amount. By all means shop him to Planning, and if he's knocked down your wall...

Builders quotes... include VAT? Upfront payment??

I was lucky enough to only pay 2.5% up front to secure a date, then informal stage payments along the way. Perhaps 10% up front, another 10% when initial materials are on site, then the rest in agreed stages; after fondations / floor slab, walls to plate, roof, etc. Whatever you end up...

underground gym in back garden - is it allowed?

Even if it is exempt from building regs, you're going to want some expert advice. If you're digging to a depth of 1.5m within the vicinity of the house, you don't want to affect the existing foundations.

    Labour costs

Wouldn't want to comment on the labour costs, but getting rid of waste can be suprisingly expensive. You could probably fill a small skip with that amount of turf.

How would I block up a bath overflow?

Surely even if you fill up the overflow holes with silicone, water will still be able to get through the spindle that operates the plug mechanism?

    Planning Conditions - Obscured Glass

Woody is right the Planners aren't going to care - they don't come round at the end of the build to check that you've met the conditions. It'll only be a problem if someone mentions it to them, and it sounds like that's not going to happen. I added two extra windows into my extension -...

Car Port - Foundations / Slab

I have to put in some foundations / slab for a 3-bay oak framed car port (9 x 5m). It will require Building Regs due to its size and proximty to the boundary. The oak framing company have provided the drawings for PP, but there is no spec for the groundworks. I have been in touch with...

Self employed, Pro/cons of reg as Ltd company

Sorry, people are going to think I'm trolling, but I'm genuinely not. Here's a scenario; Non-VAT wants to earn £100k a year. To do this he's going to need to spend £200k on materials and overheads. He therefore needs to charge his customers £300k. VAT will also have to spend £200k on...

Self employed, Pro/cons of reg as Ltd company

Dizz, I am sorry that I am too stupid to understand your original example. I have found that the recent replies with less numbers and more words match my level of intelligence far better. If you are VAT registered you will earn less, but not necessarily 20% less, because you can claim back...
