Therostat comes on only when you press in the big round dial. Goes off as soon as you depress. Surely this is not normal?

Hi, I'm new here so forgive me if this issue has poped up before. I have a very old back boiler and when the heating as reached its peak, the boiler makes alot of bubbling noises for about 20 seconds. Also, the themostat keeps turning on and off every few minutes or so. Any ideas.
