Tested between the reds and the switched live wire with the wall switch ON. I know I don't fully understand but I am trying to the best of my ability.

My measurement is from the reds to the switched live wire with the wall switch ON. Here is the photo.

Latest. A voltage test in Room 2 shows only 35 volts on the multimeter. In Room 1 248 volts.

Of course I got that the other way round! Old age creeping in...

The photo in #28 is no longer valid. I changed the wiring: brown to switched live and blue to neutral.

Brown is live and blue neutral. Changed from red live and black neutral, green of course is earth.

Yes but aren't the brown/blue interchangeable?

Has anybody out there experienced the, I believe, traumatic experience of a full house rewire caused by the appearance of green goo? Over the years I have cleaned some sockets contaminated with the green stuff. Should I consider a rewire even if only some sockets and one or two switches are...

We've had goo in some sockets over the years that have been cleaned. Emptying the house for a rewire is not something we will consider unless absolutely necessary.

Had a closer look and discovered that the black wire in the switch was covered with green gunge; cleaned with meths, cut and stripped fresh end and now I am getting the switched live black wire on the rose. Will wire again tomorrow, time for dinner. Watch this space! Hope it works this time.

This is the result of the test: (circuit de-energized and switches on) in Room 1 the connections are correct, the red wires and the switched live wire have continuity (beep). However, in Room 2 none of the 3 black wires have continuity with the reds, i.e. no switched live wire. What next? What...
