Legionnaire's in solar panels - a myth to deter the DIYer!

I found this useful when I did ours. http://www.greenbooklive.com/filelibrary/MIS_3001_Issue_1_2_Solar_heating_25-02-08.pdf Mentions legionella and says you need a secondary means of heating the cylinder to 60 degrees which it sounds like you have.

    Is this dangerous?

STIMES, fair point, but when we had one, the pilot light used to blow out once or twice a year, so though it could just be that. I do know my limits though, and if it isn't in the user instructions, I won't do it. adlplumbing, unfortunately not, but thanks for the offer.

    Is this dangerous?

Thanks guys, you have confirmed what I thought about carbon monoxide leaking. I'll keep nagging, and get another neighbour (works for Transco) to have a word too. Brian.

    Is this dangerous?

Thanks all. A bit more info that I should have put in the original post. It is fully pumped, and another neighbours identical boiler does not have those terminals linked out. I guess that is it then, I'll keep hassling her to get it checked, especially since it smells and is in her kid's...

    Is this dangerous?

Hi all, a neighbour asked me to have a look at her boiler (Baxi Solo conventional boiler, about 15 years old) because it was smelling funny and not working. The pilot light thermocouple was pushed in the hole, but the retaining nut was half way down the pipe. The spade connectors on the gas...

    Venting bathroom fan through soffit

We had problems with wind blowing steam from our extractor fan back into the soffit vents causing condensation in the loft. Check their position and maybe block one off either side of the extractor. Ours are continuous vents, so we taped it up for a couple of feet either side of the extractor...

DS 40 - Thermal Store / Heat Store

Firstly, I am not a heating engineer, but I have an almost identical setup (Albion Mainsflow and Baxi Solo Boiler) and had the same problem. First thing I checked was the flow temperature from the boiler. This didn't exceed 80 degrees C with the store stat set to 60 and the boiler stat set to...

    Opinion - Deck screws

These are excellent screws - read the review (not mine BTW). They drive easily (serrated threads) and have held our decking (38mm boards) for two years so far with no failures.

    Deck lighting - any thoughts

What about using the flush deck lights to mark the split so you don't fall over/off it in the dark. We have used them for the split level and the edges as anthonyUK says, and have other lighting too to see what you are doing.

    Hot water temperature control

Why control the tank when you can control the temperature of the water instead? http://www.screwfix.com/search.do;jsessionid=HPQMELEXC0WKKCSTHZOCFFY?_dyncharset=UTF-8&fh_search=tmv&searchbutton.x=0&searchbutton.y=0&searchbutton=submit Maybe ask on the plumbing forum for advice on this. I...

    ODD ELECTRIC RESULTS ON REWIRE

houserenovator, I don't suppose you are close to a large transmitter? A friend was, and we could measure 5V on his radiators, but he was about a mile or so from Winter Hill. I expect that this would upset many digital testers, but might not upset an old wind-up type.

    The eye in the sky.

I seem to remember it has been done. The idea was dropped when a section of motorway ran parallel to a 30 zone and the system got the wrong speed limit. Apparently 30 on a motorway wasn't fun

Screed floor. Any tips for getting it level please

I have only ever screeded one floor, so I may have done it completely wrong, but it has been down a few years with no problems, so it can't be that far off. I fixed two rails (made from perforated shelving uprights) about 18" from each end of the room, and made them level. The thought being...

    Which modulating system boiler?

Found this http://www.opentherm.eu/pdf/OpenThermProducts.pdf from here http://www.opentherm.eu/ but no idea which is best etc. HTH, Brian.

    Auto switch off device

What about a normal mechanical plug in timer? Just put the pins in for switch off, say one at midday, one at 5pm and one at 10pm, then use the override on the side to switch it on. Not exactly what you want, but might be close enough.

drop ceiling / insulation in garage?

We have a room like this and found that most of the heat loss was from air coming into the void past joist ends and from unsealed pipes and cables going into the void from the garage. If yours is the same, insulating underneath won't help much. If you are going to fit a new ceiling, you could...

    putting on paper bag

A Muslim man on Beyond Belief (Radio 4) was also calling for them to be banned. He said, "I can't walk into a bank wearing a balaclava, so they shouldn't be allowed to wear them either." Good to know that I'm not the only one who doesn't feel comfortable around people dressed like that.

Cold winter, March winds, April showers (I know, but it's towards the end of March) - all looks promising to me.

    Localised damp above air brick

I have seen something similar where damp was caused by by ventilation cooling a wall - condensation will form on the coldest part of a room. Do the wall and floor feel colder in that area? If so, could a deflector be fitted under the floor to stop the cold air from outside blowing directly on...

    fitting new thermostatic shower valve

When I fitted ours, I took the valve to the local plumber's merchant with a sketch of what I wanted to do, showing pipe diameters etc. Got the right bits and free advice about how to do the job too. HTH, Bri.
