    Potterton Fused Neutral?

We used to make medical equipment and had to fit live and neutral fuses for equipment exported to Europe. The reason being that (at that time anyway), the plugs could be put in either way up, so you didn't know which was going to be live. Not sure if the same logic applies to a boiler though...

Concrete floor - dig up and replace or insulate on top????

Hmm, not sure about the first link - seemed to make sense at the time. The second link says: Solid or engineered timber floors can be laid directly either as a floating floor or nailed to floating battens. Might be worth a look if you wanted this type of floor. I personally would try this...

Concrete floor - dig up and replace or insulate on top????

Why use screed? http://www.celotex.co.uk/downloads.asp?i=23 Edit: sorry this link seems to have stopped working... This is what it said: Chipboard floor finish A VCL should be laid over the velotex insulation boards and turned up 100mm at room perimeters behind the skirting. It is...

Wife got me an ipod nano (5th generation) for my birthday - love it. Bit expensive, but easy to use, looks cool and lets you pause the radio.

    Olde insults

I was surprised recently when I found out that tw*t is different north to south. In the north (well, where I live anyway) it is nearly equivalent to c*nt, but I believe that it is less offensive in the south.

    Lowering a concrete floor. How?!?

Try Aerogel. http://www.proctorgroup.com/index.asp?lm=523 Should come in about half the thickness of Celotex etc. but not cheap. Give them a call, they are very helpful. HTH, Bri.

    Inexplicably cold bedroom

we had one of those, turned out to be draughts under the floor coming in where the joists come through the cavity wall. Can you feel a draught between the skirting board and the floor? It can be hard to feel because it gets diffused by the carpet. If you have this, the best way to fix it is...

    combination cylinder

Are you sure it's not a small thermal store with a header tank at the top? We have an Albion Mainsflow which has an internal coil to heat the hot water at mains pressure. I was confused at first because the shower head is higher than than the header tank bit. HTH, Bri.

hot cold hot cold shower !!!!!

I'm fairly sure that a faulty prv can cause the temperature variations, as the water flowing through the heat exchanger would not be pressurised. Get that fixed first and see if it cures your problem.

    Shocking response from police

Looks like there was some artistic license in the reporting: For clarification, at no point were any official warnings or words of advice given to the home owner in relation to the use of a knife or offensive weapon in their home. From http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/8451877.stm...

    Help identifying adapter plug

Hi Steve, I posted it as a suggestion if the OP couldn't find pin adapters anywhere. This PSU give 20V at 2A, the same as the one in the photo, so could possibly replace it completely. Should have made that clear really. Bri.

    Help identifying adapter plug

Something like this http://maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=229072 would work, but you need to know which is positive and negative on the plug. Does the thing it plugs into indicate this?

    Car charging installation

    a) I don't know, but I suspect that using the electricity to charge batteries for electric cars would be more efficient. The Honda FCX Clarity is only slightly more efficient than a standard car, and uses four times the energy of a Tesla for considerably worse performance.

    Car charging installation

Might be if: a) they can split hydrogen from water efficiently - no sign yet - but you never know. b) you could store it for more than a week in a vehicle - big problem because it leaks out of any practical container because the molecules are so small.

    Car Doors

Handy tip: never park straight or considerately. Especially at the supermarket, I park away from everyone else, at an angle with at least one wheel across the line. No one every parks next to me because they assume I will hit their car on the way out. I got fed up with the same thing...

    Insulation

Sorry JohnD, but that does sound unusual to me. To drop that quickly with well insulated brick/block construction (high thermal mass) is just wrong. I would bet that the outside walls are plasterboarded and the heat is escaping behind them. OP, are these walls plasterboarded? Bri.
