My new Grant Vortex oil boiler does not light

No, not in the least bit. You're just trying to put honest, hard-working tradesman out of business. Oilman: The standard of debate on that other forum is appalling. Suggest you bow out. ChrisR: Sorry I haven't replied to your email. Away this week and can only get on www. Paul

You will think i am stupid but?

Young Plum, well done on getting your level 2. You are obviously keen to learn so I suggest that you collar your tutor whenever you can and get him/her to explain things more thoroughly. If you really have got as far as level 2 without being shown basic principles like hot water rising above...

    Not your average bleeder...

Now I may be playing with fire here - literally - but do you have to go to all that trouble? Wouldn't simply holding a small plastic beaker upside down above the bleed valve and putting a match to it (away from the rad) show hydrogen without blowing the place to smithereens? Explosions occur...

Sorry. It's this 6ft wide laptop I take with me whenever I go out. :?

Ah, so it's safe and healthy. Seriously, Toasty, would you have undertaken this project with the new regs in place?

    Two immersion tanks setup, possible?

Me too! Probably a suck-it-and-see (expensive suck). Agree, any sharp bends would have the hot pockets fighting for rite of passage.

    Two immersion tanks setup, possible?

I think we're talking about two different things, TexMex. I am trying to imagine the scenario before any water is drawn, at the end of the heating cycle but before the effects of turbulence kick in. My theory is that this body of water would fairly soon settle down into a stable state and...

    Two immersion tanks setup, possible?

Mmmm, interesting. But would there be a cool area in the top tank? I have a hunch that, if left long enough, the hot in the bot (which is not theoretically hot but plain old-fashioned hot) would filter upwards enthusiastically, even through a modest aperture, given the funnel shape of a...

    Two immersion tanks setup, possible?

You may achieve double water capacity but it won't be in double quick time (if that's what you meant). You have two elements but twice as much water to heat. Curiously, you would get slightly more than double the amount of hot water because a single cylinder has warm/cool water at the bottom...

I only hope you've got Part P, Part J, Parts L, M and Q, Part Number and Part Exchange... or Prescott will have you banged up before you can say "DIY".

    Wouldn't this be cool...?

I was thinking more of valves working on the same principle as a TRV. They bolt straight on to the rad. I ain't no plumber but, looking at the datasheet of the Honeywell, I guess they use a wax regulator like a TRV but have an additional (thermostatically-controlled) heating element that forces...

    Wouldn't this be cool...?

Fascinating. Two more questions: 12 temp sensors, how many zone valves? It would get rather expensive having a motorised valve for each! (Supplementary: There are electrically controllable TRVs - found Honeywell T850 on the www - but this is analogue, incremental 8-24v. Can't find any UK...

    Wouldn't this be cool...?

Well Toasty, that looks like the dog's oojits. Apologies for confusing it with a sales pitch. You're obviously proud of it and we can see why. Two questions (maybe more later  ) Does the computer have to be on 24/7 to keep it all running? Can't see any signs of EEPROM or such. EDIT...
