    Boiler Service Q

I would get the manual up and check service procedure, mention it to the company and see what he says. If there unwilling just withhold payment. There's no way you can do a service without the casing off. 30 minutes is a long time if you're not even taking the case off, but a service can be...

    New Boiler needed?

If you tell me on the phone you can get a boiler for so much from a website there's no way a decent engineer will want the hassle of working for you. A personal hate of mine is people who know the cost of everything but value of nothing.

    Boiler Service Q

Download the installation manual for the boiler, in there will be a section on servicing detailing the steps required. If it was a national company it may very well be a 'safety inspection' or words to that effect, not a service. They follow their own (much less thorough) checklist of things...

    Unvented cylinder - what size?

Bear in mind an independent installer will offer 7 year warranty on boiler/cylinder, I think BG give one years free Homecare, without any other warranty. I don't know many people fitting Pottertons, probably for a good reason. I'd also say the salesman from BG isn't the doing the fitting, it...

    Unvented cylinder - what size?

I'd agree and go around 200 litres. On a side note, I'm assuming British Gas are doing the fitting, have you compared the quote with a couple of local gas engineers?

    Baxi Bermuda heat exchange leaking?

With the rain we have been having it could just be water coming own the flue. I find it a bit suspicious he didn't show you the leak, the only way you can see for yourself is to get a gas engineer in to take of the fire-front, it's not something you can do yourself. i wouldn't ever replace a...

    Worcester 24 Ri intelligent controllers?

I would be cautious about going with a bigger boiler, 24 kW is more than likely way oversized already. There's plenty of better boilers out there better than Worcester to consider.

    Sanitaryware fixings

You can buy ball valve seatings that double up as nylon inserts. They're not ideal but work well if it doesn't need to look to posh. http://www.toolstation.com/shop/Plumbing/d20/Washers+Fixings/sd2703/Ball+Valve+Seating+High+Pressure+White/p89817

Boulter 50-70 Economy Oil Boiler + Riello G5 Economy 50/70

If you want real piece of mind you can just change the entire burner for about £250 + labour then everything is new. You might be able to sell the old one for £50-£100 so it's not a huge outlay. I have done this on occasions where a couple of parts have failed at the same time and the burner is...

Neighbour complaint - our new combi condenser boiler flue

Have you tried just swivelling the end flue part to point it away. There's 2 screws on the inner flue terminal that can be undone to point the fumes away slightly. It's not great but might just make enough difference.

V quick question for any plumbers/DIYers pls :-)

I bought some biocide stuff (X700) and it came with the same cap with a hole- it managed to leak slightly in transit. This was from a reputable merchant so it should be legit.

Cutting 2mm off a length of 15mm copper pipe

I've never had a situation where I need to be accurate to 2mm when cutting copper. Also a clean sharp pipe slice can easily cut 3-4mm off an end.

    Stopcock replacement - Surestop

Get him to replace the stop cock and fit the sure-stop after. They are brilliant when they work/don't leak.

    Best anti-fungus white bath silicone

Dow Corning 785 for me also. Although I do also use Mapei coloured silicones for when it's needed. They seem to work equally well, just more expensive & harder to find.

Central Heating Inhibitor - Price Variation

I thought it had to be Buildcert approved to meet minimum standards, although it seems I might be wrong. http://www.buildcert.com/cias.htm I also wouldn't say it's the best, but for the price/performance it is ideal for me, and I've never had an issue with corrosions on systems I've fitted...

Central Heating Inhibitor - Price Variation

You missed out BES Cura inhibitor ~£3.50 / litre It's the stuff I use and never had any problems. It comes with build-cert approval so meets the requirements. I only use it to satisfy the benchmark, and as a nice earner to top up systems for a tenner. There's probably a good reason on the...

    Choice of new boiler

Avoid French/Italian makes, and don't bother with overpriced "premium" brands like Worecester/Vaillant. Ideal Logic + is a great price and comes with 7 year warranty. I don't know many engineers who break down a price, simply because you get customers looking online for prices and...

    bottle trap won't seal

I rememeber taking one back as the nut pulled of the trap body with minor pressure. Asked if they had many problems with these traps and the chap said no never. Minute later as they are still serving me another man comes in with the exact same trap with the exact same problem

    bottle trap won't seal

If I'm not mistaken that looks to be a cheapie Screwfix or similar. I've tried them on a couple of occasions and they can be buggers to seal. Go out and buy a McAlpine one and you will have no problems.
