Apparently the chimney has been blocked off...

OK - cleared all the infill. The rough concrete must be an attempt at a hearth as underneath appears to be loose dirt and random stones. We kept the plasterwork on the left due to the lintel concerns raised earlier - I didn't want to disturb the lower row of red brick more than I had although...

Apparently the chimney has been blocked off...

Thanks @ted456. We've pulled some more rubble out there but here are the answers as far as we know: Looks like there was a hearth but it's a mess of concrete with broken floorboards to the sides. We cannot seem to get to something that isn't rough concrete - elsewhere in the house there were...

Apparently the chimney has been blocked off...

There is a fireplace in the room above. But the chimney stack was removed sometime ago.

Apparently the chimney has been blocked off...

We've now removed the fireplace and can see that there was a wider space initially. It was made smaller at some point in the past - probably to fit a previous gas fire which is no longer used. The brick for the newer, smaller firebox is not in good shape and can be physically moved on the left...

Apparently the chimney has been blocked off...

So far it appears dry, and checking the chimney...there is no chimney! So the fireplace has been stuffed with rubbish over the years. There's still a flue there but the chimney physically removed from the house.

Apparently the chimney has been blocked off...

The point is mainly I don't know what I'm looking at - I expected to see something relatively solid behind there and nothing is solid - a metal plate for example blocking off the flue. I'm not sure the cardboard would have come over the top either to block off the hole in picture 2. I just...

Apparently the chimney has been blocked off...

Another nice find in our house. We're having some plastering done and decided the horrid electric fire is going, along with the surround. I pulled out the fire easy enough to find cardboard behind it (fire hazard - although the fire itself was more for effect than heat). And the sound of...

There's no joist in the corner of the room

Got the dust out of there and the plinth is actually part wooden (left) and part concrete (right): The wood seems secure: I think, looking at where the chimney comes out, the concrete runs in line with the chimney breast itself. The joist at the edge of the room is not the same as those in...

There's no joist in the corner of the room

I think that's the plan for me too. We will be having a new ceiling but I don't think it comes up to the section in question.

There's no joist in the corner of the room

Hi all, Starting a new thread as the older problem has morphed slightly. To recap: 22mm square-edged boards are going down first, then 18mm solid oak hidden screwed on top. However, after removing some tiles that represented an old fireplace upstairs, I found that there was no joist continued in...

    Removing a leylandii hedge

I take it you feel the same about Rated People? tbh I haven't had much luck with either of them in the past. But the idea is good.

    Removing a leylandii hedge

They're not in South Wales are they? ;-) I may do a MyBuilder quote just to rip the trees down then.

    Removing a leylandii hedge

I did think of that but some of the trunks seem quite wide. Then there's the time to do the chipping... but it's certainly a good idea. The difference between hiring a woodchipper and a van would be negligible...

    Removing a leylandii hedge

Waiting is not a problem but we are aware of the nesting issue. The reason I mention it was that the birds were rather "confrontational" whenever we went up into one corner of the garden. But that stopped happening in May.

Replacing old fireplace hearth tiles with floorboards

I'm finishing up ripping up the old floorboards and will be replacing them with new ones. In the corner of the room, there was an old fireplace and you can see from this image, the far joist has been cut off. This means there is a 20cm gap on the edge where floorboards will not be supported...

    Removing a leylandii hedge

We did have a nest up until last month at one end but there's been no activity for several weeks.

    Removing a leylandii hedge

I have around 45m of 15' leylandii hedge. I have tried trimming them back but the previous owners let them get too big and we have brown patches randomly along the hedge. We've decided instead to remove them as we cannot get them to a manageable size and replace with fencing. One quote was...
