More Memory - worth it ?

You can look at the task manager while the machine is being used. Looking at how much of the page file is being used is the best way of checking is memory is a limiting factor. 32bit os can use a maximum of 4gb but quite a bit will be used by devices which have stuff mapped into memory. You...

    RAC/AA recovery

I thought these always covered the cardholder and not the vehicle.

    Hitachi AX-M68D not functioning correctly!

Yes if it fails to turn on properly it's usually the power supply and by far the most common power supply fault is failing capacitors.

Samsung LE40M87BD 40" LCD TV Clicks but won't turn on

Sams explanation sounds spot on to me. What do you disagree with?

Samsung LE40M87BD 40" LCD TV Clicks but won't turn on

Marlin are pretty useless for specialised components such as these. They only do one range of high temperature capacitors which is the first thing to filter on when choosing replacements. They don't list a manufacturer or spec. If you didn't fit the high temperature caps then I would strip...

    What sort of laptop?

Notebooks are not normally that suitable for editing video. Decent software for video editing will use CUDA for video conversion to gain a lot of speed but this requires a good graphics card which you don't get unless you have a gaming laptop. Similarly you need a fast hard disk. Some can take...

    BMW 1 series on Ice

 I don't know the specifics of that model but sometimes there is not enough clearance to fit those type of chains on the rear. I suppose fitting them to the front is better than not at all.

VW LT 46 Brake pedal excessive travel

How are the brake hoses? They can expand under pressure. Maybe the standard ones are a bit weak.

    Looking at a 4x4

I doubt the merc is a proper four wheel drive. It's probably similar to my audi a4 quattro which has a 50:50 torque split front/rear and then standard traction control on each wheel to apply the brake if it starts to slip. It does work very well and in the snow last year I had no problems when I...

    Timing belt replacement interval

Audi which basically use the same engines it's 75k miles or 5 years. With the water pump I think it's a case that you have the cam belt off anyway so easy to change the water pump at the same time as a precaution.

    home diagnostics

Petrols after 2000 and diesels after 2005 will have a OBD2 diagnostic port. You can get cheap scanner but they don't always work reliably. I have seen some malfunction and report the wrong fault code. Even with this it only reports engine fault codes. You need specific tools to read other...

    smelly air con

Its due to bacteria building up. When you turn off the aircon it stays damp inside and when the car warms up again its an ideal breeding ground for bacteria. If you go into Halfords you can get some spray which you let off inside of the car with the aircon on recirculate mode and it kills the...

wiper repair-did I pay the right price?

It depends how much time it took them to do it. From that price I would assume about 3/4 to an hour.

Quality Screwdriver Handle For Interchangeable Heads

I have one of these :- http://www.amazon.co.uk/Rolson28413-9-in-1-Screwdriver-Magnetic/dp/B003312RM2?tag=gbnetser-21 It is a budget range item but the built in torch and the telescopic magnetic pick up part has proved usefull in the past. This looks pretty good...

    Drilling into Victorian brick

You can buy a cheap SDS drill for about £25. I have one and it works fine and certainly much better than my regular drill.

    Streaming from PC to TV

I have the WD Live TV which is very good. Plays practically everything via DLNA, windows file share, or either of it's two USB ports. I tend to play most stuff off a portable hard disk but I can watch stuff from my archive over the network to my nas box. I have a wired connection but you can...

    New Sky+ plus box problem

If it's only some channels then I would suggest the dish alignment or a faulty lnb (the bit in front of the disk where the cables connect to). You can get similar symptoms if the drive in the box starts to fail but this would affect all HD channels.

    Engine Flush??

What type of engine is it? If it's a regular petrol then you will be fine. If it has a turbo and you suspect the previous owner migh have been using standard oil and not the higher grade it requires then a flush might be a good idea.

    Finding a leak

If you want to spray carb cleaner make 100% sure that you dont spray it around the air intake in you have a MAF (mass air flow sensor) as it can damage them and you will be looking at a fairly expensive repair bill.

MOT Failed - LAMBDA sensor and Catalyst?

If it's not the sensor at fault then maybe a leak in the exhaust manifold (the lambda sensor is normally connected about where the manifold connects to the main exhaust) or a faulty or dirty spark plug causing unburnt fuel and air to enter the exhaust. There are lots of guides on testing the...
