    Combi or Conventional.

Horses for .... Previously house has a 30kw Combi, ran a nice shower and could never run out, which with two lodgers was nice, no hot water cylinder so big open plan bathroom. However you can't rinse dishes without it going cold three dishes in because it can't heat quite instantly. New house...

    Dimming LEDs - options.

Had the whole house re-wired, looking to have dimmers in a couple of the rooms, and just re-asking the question before going ahead an buying. I looked into various options including some more 'industrial systems' but came back to running conventional wiring, with the topology of power going to...

12" (or bigger) paint trays and liners

Especially for emulsion its so easy to wash a tray, why waste the worlds resources with plastic liners! I can understand using disposable foam rollers for gloss/2pack, but again get yourself a sheep skin roller and wash it, will last half a lifetime with care. Daniel

How to stop painting skinning over in the tin!!

Never done it with paint, but it works well with PU adhesive such as the brown 'gorilla glue' which skins in 24h. Daniel

Advice on staircase prep and DIY painting pls

If its been oiled/waxed you might have a pita waiting to happen, so hopefully it is some sort of varnish/coating that dries. Do not under estimate how long it will take to prep and paint, did mine in the old house, two whole weekends to to go from old white gloss to new white gloss. There is...

Single pipe central heating systems - hybrid options?

Seems your right, they are on there (and listed for sale at numerous outlets) only last week.

Single pipe central heating systems - hybrid options?

I thought it was just the MiGenie that have been discontinued, in favour of the 'Wiser' system? The boiler isn't new, installed 2012 as far as we know, so whole the manual talks about compensating I don't know if it has opentherm. It's got 'mechanical' knobs for water and heating temperature...

Single pipe central heating systems - hybrid options?

Hi, yes obviously the sizing of the original rads would likely have been very different from that of what we need now. However of the 18 or so rads only two are the originals from circa 1965, and the various replacements appear to have been done one or two at a time in a seemly random fashion...

Single pipe central heating systems - hybrid options?

Indeed, you would get lower return temps and better condensing, but a the cost of cooler rads at the end and so lower total output. It would also have make balancing the five 22mm loops against each other even more challenging. Viessmann Vitodens 100 35kW system boiler, believed new in 2012...

Single pipe central heating systems - hybrid options?

I mean the pipes running back to the boiler. Each radiator has a pair of 10mm pipes going to it, which then connects to a pair of 22mm pipes, either directly or if more than a foot away via 15mm, which then take the combined flow back to the boiler. One pair of 22mm for each side of the house...

Single pipe central heating systems - hybrid options?

Ran a short separate thread on the topic, but while I questioned it myself, it seems that running individual droppers in 10mm, which then then join a 22mm back bone, gives reasonable flow speed for the size of rad were using. With the advantage that it can be run in the wall within the thickness...

Do radiator top grills and side panels reduce heat output?

Hinder, but only fractionally. Have a look on Stelrads website they do various style but the 'standard' non-designer rads come without grills (Elite) with flat grils (Compact) and curved grills (Softline) and you can compare the outputs and each size and see the difference. Daniel

Single pipe central heating systems - hybrid options?

Just to post back to this, we have decided to condemn the pipes under the ground floor, given what we can see of the pipes in the first floor, and chase out the wall to run new droppers down for the ground floor rads. Expect they would have been ok for ages more, but a lot of compression...

    two appliances on fcu spur

Not sure where the trend for having an switch FCU above counter for each appliance is. Might be nice in an industrial type setting, and or if it was a dp switch in a rental maybe, but in most domestic settings I would just extend the ring down to a double socket, or even a spur, and just plug it...

    Bathroom extractor supply cable

Normally the fan have an over-run on a timer, so take a 'hard' permanent feed and 'switched' live, so they come on with the light, but of a period of time later. Depending on how it is wired, often you will have all the required wires at the light fitting. Fan isolators then have three poles to...

    Live Neutral Reverse Fault

If there is a break in the N or E loop then the first job is to find that I would say. As said, the way the testers work, they can mis-display the cause of other faults. Daniel

    10mm droppers to large radiator.

Who knows, looks like it will be one 600x1800 and one 600x2000 for the big room. 6x9m with a big window, but it's still a lot of radiator.

    10mm droppers to large radiator.

If it reduces the output to 85%, presumably about 15% difference, if you take it down to 70/50 nearly 30% difference. But point taken! Measuring up the space 2000 would be tight in one of the places, so we are looking at one 1800 and one 2000. Plumber wants to do 600 because the calcs say its...

    10mm droppers to large radiator.

Ok, so all in all it sounds like we should be all good, which is nice to know. Although suspended floor, the crawl void is only a few inches and the whole floor is period oak tiles which we are not lifting. The plumber confirmed this evening that the calcs come out at 21000btu which seems to...
