    Silver pipes

Mates Barrot box flat has this too, soldering is neat as, to they are not doing it to cover up ****. Looks dead smart, but I also cants see any other gain. I guess it it sells houses.... As per the OP, its a mat silver paint, rather than the older battleship grey. Daniel

    Garage Built With Conditions

I guess it depends what they where trying to ensure. - That there where not a stack of cars littering up the roads. - That the didnt board up the door and make it into another room. Daniel

    MVHR vs leaky houses?

I will have to have a read of that report. My parents house was build for them in the late 80's and included a early Villavent system from new. I expect the air tightness of the building is better than most of its age, but well below the current minimum requirements. However the now called...

can i use an old electric shower as a inline water heater

Would this be the sole heating for the house, or for single tap outlet, or what? Typically showers turn on using the push button on the front, and then turn off after a short delay, rather than being controlled with a tap. Daniel

    Second hand boiler

I think this would come into it, but equally a mate of mate fitted a 3-4yo second hand boiler from someone who had decided to put a combi in. Cant remember what he paid, but not a lot, and its given no trouble that i know o, certainly its still in the house. Daniel

Blocking off an unused (never used) chimney in a new house?

As the stack comes out in the middle of the valley there is very little visible in the attic space, I am not at the house myself right now so cant confirm if there would be room for an air brick or not. Obviously however one could be added to the base of the stack just above the roofline, but...

Blocking off an unused (never used) chimney in a new house?

Thanks for the reply. The flue is in the center of the house, with rooms on both sides, and hence is heated until it passes above the 1st floor ceiling, where it emerges in a valley in the center of the house. And the risks of condensed vapor are mainly damp patches on the walls? Daniel

Blocking off an unused (never used) chimney in a new house?

No, no comments at all? Obviously if you blocking off the bottom and leaving the top open you may well get damp issues, and if there is old soot etc in there you may get chemical issues along side that. But if its fully sealed and waterproof at the top and bottom, its just a two-story...

    Laptop "upgrade"

Tbh, if you are thinking of getting rid anyway I would just stick a £30 disk based unit and tide you over for however many weeks/months/years till you replace it for an easy life. Or alternatively, work out what you want from the new laptop, and jump ship now. If your computer use is just...

Blocking off an unused (never used) chimney in a new house?

Is it acceptable to block off the top and bottom of an unused chimney in a new house without providing ventilation to the space? Looking online a lot of guides recommend fitting a ventilated cowl and the top and a louver at the bottom, stating that the soot and associated chemicals cause...

    Laptop "upgrade"

I have only used SDDs with Win7, my understanding is that both Vista and XP can be used with a SSD but you need third party software from the drive manufacturer to work as they done support 'TRIM' which is normally used. If its a high spec laptop you keen to keep hold off, upgrading to copy...

    Laptop "upgrade"

You can compare anything you like.... SSD are typically offer faster access times, are more robust, and quieter running. But they are also typically smaller capacity, more expensive, and performance degrades with time...

PULL CORDS IN BEDROOM - WHY?

Good isnt it! Well, until you want to see anything on the other side of the room. I have seen pull cords on the wall where the bed would be a lot in older houses, but in conjunction with switch on the wall by the door. Daniel

    Laptop "upgrade"

SSD are slightly more complicated than a direct swap, or can be, and I have had issues with them in a small form factor barebones kit. Why do you see it as an upgrade? I would just change it like for like on most situations. Daniel

How often should I get my gas boiler serviced?

Spoke with JonJB over the phone, as was expected he is a bit far away from me, but was able to provide good information non the less. - £85 is a reference to an in joke, but also about the right price for the area. - The list in the opening post is angled towards a Worcester combi and...

Caravan Consumer unit - Have i wired correctly?

I agree it should not be rocket science, that it is not outside the scope of what a competent person could do even if not fully qualified, and that towsure is a fairly reputable company. But also that is something you can get quite wrong with easy, thats not dead simple or straight forward, and...

How often should I get my gas boiler serviced?

Cant really tell if the post about it costing £85 is a **** take or what. I presume RGI stands for 'registered gas installer' aka someone on the gas safe register? Cant send you a pm as with not 'friends' mad. Have sent you a text as you have a phone no on your profile. Daniel
