OK Brushes are about 60% worn so unless they have already been replaced and sticking. (do they easily move up and down in the holder?) then I doubt this is the problem. However the motor should activate when you set to spin -the other noise is probably the drain pump ....so cant rule out...

Can you post model number and age Assume you have checked motor brushes? Does it go to drain on any dial setting ie can you set it to spin only? At the start of the wash program do you hear the water valve activate and fill through drawer?
