Insulating a Bay Window Wall and Ceiling

You must bung the celotex against the outside wall in the void between downstairs ceiling and upstairs floorboards because that hidden area will still get super cold and will then become the only cold area for the warm air to condense on therefore thanks to the new yummy warm surface above it'll...

The best heavy duty plasterboard fixings

I recently had to fit a wall mounted TV bracket which caused me some grief so I'm putting this on as I'm sure many people must search for this. Firstly you need to know whether your wall is single or double boarded. I've just used the largest 'grip it's' and wasn't impressed, gave up with them...

Lighting requirement (lumens) for a lounge

Yeah.............I've seen those, they have integrated bulbs, so you have to change the whole fitting when the lamp fails, I think screwfix sell them

Insulating a Bay Window Wall and Ceiling

Dan,you're doing the job spot on, but don't forget to insulate BENEATH the floorboards or that void will get condensation forming and mildew will grow there (happened to me years ago). The foil layer of the celotex is a vapour barrier, so you only have to tape across the joins between them if...

Lighting requirement (lumens) for a lounge

Exactly Flame...........the real answer is to build houses without any windows and doors.............that'll keep that lovely heat in!

Lighting requirement (lumens) for a lounge

I haven't bought any yet,..............I'm still in the planning (how many lumens?) stage aren't I?

Lighting requirement (lumens) for a lounge

EFL................don't be daft mate...............if you remove 10 holes about 3" in diameter and 4"deep you haven't exactly halved the thickness over the whole ceiling area have you? did you also forget that I'd already stated the construction is already BELOW the required total U value...

Lighting requirement (lumens) for a lounge

Taylor.............of course you can compromise the ceiling......BUT......only if your wall n floor values are high enough to make the whole structure below the lower than the standard required, but don't pierce all the way thru the celotex, what's the problem with that?

Lighting requirement (lumens) for a lounge

The regs inspector said it would be fine for downlighters (but I don't want loads of them)..............I'll be using shallower ones that won't fully penetrate the celotex

Lighting requirement (lumens) for a lounge

Here's the thing...............the room is a rear extension with a sloping tiled roof above, it has 2 velux windows in, this weekend I have to fit 150mm celotex between the flat ceiling rafters, so whatever ceiling lighting I bung in cannot ever be changed! I'm thinking a bright central...

Lighting requirement (lumens) for a lounge

Hello all you clever lot, I've trolled the internet n got meself all confused with different answers, so it's best to ask the experts. My lounge will be 23ft x 12ft with an 8ft ceiling, I want to sit in it n watch the tele with the lights on and a relaxing, theraputic glow to the room rather...

The actual effectiveness of celotex type products?

Many thanks lads for your answers, my question was purely interest, but it has taught me about diminishing returns and that probably 6" of celotex is about as cost effective as it gets because 12" ain't twice as good!

The actual effectiveness of celotex type products?

SFK...............of course I can say John's figures are made up cos that's what John said...........but thanks to everyone else's contributions I realise that John's diminishing factor isn't the made up bit. If we talk just about the insulation's effect upon heat loss (therefore ignoring...

The actual effectiveness of celotex type products?

Very interesting John.............your figures are made up.............does anyone on here know the real figures?

The actual effectiveness of celotex type products?

As we know, size does matter and thickness is everything..............BUT just how good is the product? what I mean by that is; does 1" stop 10% of heat passing through?, 2" stops 20%? 6" stops 95%? ( I realise the answer would be theoretical but it would be nice to have some kind of idea)

    Gas exams?

Dave..............I'm in Stoneleigh near the station, retiring at 58..................as a small wooden man once said...............'that's the way to do it'. You'll like this bit, when I finished my electrical exams, they asked me to come back n teach part-time, so for a while I taught the...

    Gas exams?

Puller, that's kind of you to sympathise with Dan, but let's face it, it's just a bit of banter, n who don't enjoy reading a bit of that!, Dan's a clever bloke, he can take it n still rise above it I'm sure.......................what is the point of being alive if we can't all have a bit of fun...

AGAS................we seem to be suffering a communication crisis.................you've suggested you think I am the SIL (that was the gamble) I hoped I had relieved you of that idea with the information I gave you.............it seems not
