    PAT test and RCD protection.

I am guessing from your question that you are being told by the main contractor that you must have your equipment PAT'd before going on site. As others have said there is no fixed time period laid down anywhere but for construction sites the suggested norm from the IEE is a full...

    Part P review?

I agree Part P in itself is not a bad thing, it is as others have said in response to this post the fact you have to pay a significant amount to comply whether thats to another body each year to self certify or the local authority to sign off. It is my belief that when they go to...

    Part P review?

Trouble is they will consult with the bodies that have a vested interest in keeping the pay a fee schemes, not to the people who like me object strongly to paying a fee to a body who says im ok or not after ive spent thousands of pounds and probably thousands of hours getting my certificates...

    CU Enclosure and EMMA enclosures.

Hi Holmslaw, I thought this might come into play but wasnt sure given one of the recent posts on a melting/burnt CU cover and following a quick scan i couldnt find anything specific in the regs. Londonboy I will try and get some pictures uploaded once i have found my USB cable to...

    CU Enclosure and EMMA enclosures.

In a domestic scenario Is it ok to leave the front cover off a CU if that CU is in a cupboard which only holds it and the meter , is about 2 mtrs off the ground and locked. I dont know why its missing but it is Looking in the regs the wooden enclosure its now in seems to meet the IP criteria...

Is this electrical work in my loft dodgy???

Its not good :) To join this if using terminal strips each connection should be securely placed in the terminal strip. It looks like your earths are just twisted together ? Then as the current regs require that the cables joints cannot be put under stress the terminal strips should be enclosed...

    Large Beko Fridge Freezer

Jenny, I know this may sound ridiculous but, have you only recently bought it. I ask because believe it or not it might be too cold for it wherever you are placing the unit. My large philips F/freezer has just been moved from the kitchen to the garage and during this cold weather the freezer has...

    Kitchen lighting and notification

Just to make your decision even more justified. Just got back from a job where in the house they have 5 ELV downlight in the kitchen, 5 in the living room 3 on the stairs 2 in the bathroom 5 in the main bedroom and 3 in the second bedroom. I got called out because the lighting circuit had...

    Kitchen lighting and notification

Unless you are having to add cable then i would say not. A 1 or 1.5mm cable should be supplying the existing transformers somewhere. If there is sufficient cable to reach your new 240v lights then you are not adding or extending the circuit just doing a replacement.

    Lighting cable problem advice please

Did that and it was ok but i will try again and waggle the cable a bit more. Im still confused over the "live" indication on the earth conductor The cable was literaly connected to nothing other than a terminal block at one end where it stuck out the wall which i put on for safety whilst i was...

    Bathroom Ceiling Extractor Fan Problem

The two plastic discs are usually just caps, remove these by prising them off (shouldnt take hardly any pressure to remove) this will then expose the screws. A few fittings just have a clip that needs to be pushed in with a screw driver then the face drops down, BUT is your bathroom...

changing a bulb in bathroom sealed downlighter

We're all guessing a bit without a piccy but usualy you twist off the metal ring that is in the bathroom which releases the glass and gives access to the bulb. They can be quite stiff as they have a silicon seal between it and the sealing. Never come across one that needs to be pried off as i...

3 flex cables into 13A mains socket

Hi as other have said they should go in. One tip if you havent already done this, make sure each bit of exposed cable going into the terminal is the same length, sometimes if 1 is longer than the others it stops a good fit because you think you are putting pressure on whilst tightening but the...

Quick daft question about screwless switch covers

 Not so daft, i had the same situation and a very consciencous tennant who didnt want any damage causing. So i tried lifting twisting and levering the face plate no joy so then the same with in this case the rocker switch. Just got a bit of movement when the tennant started to panic...

Cable & earth query on low energy downlights

OK so if its got the square in a square symbol the actual casing does not need to be earthed and they appear to have provided a terminal where you can just daisy chain the earths together instead of using some block or just taping up.

Adding light switch from a plug socket ?

If you are answering my question you should really have cable 2,5mm to the switched fuse spur and 1.5mm to the light or light switch then to the light. More concerned you have the correct size of cable/wire than anything else
