    Subsidence- should I be worried?

More likely to be due to the concentrated stresses under the brick panel below the window. Quite common to get minor cracking there. Not indicative of subsidence which is usually long diagonal cracks that go through opposite corners of windows (if there are any) and gradually widen from bottom...

    Energy Cap

Yes, slightly different, but concentrate enough light in one area and there's a huge amount of energy there. I guess the only advantage of using mirrors to reflect light onto the panels would be the lower cost of the mirrors compared to the PV panels.

    Anyone used a Genie lift?

All depends on what it's carrying - what is the load at the support?

    Energy Cap

No, but the energy loss obviously depends on the quality of the mirror. No mirror is perfect, but some are better than others. You must have seen those huge solar arrays that concentrate the sun's rays to a point to generate electricity? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concentrated_solar_power

    Anyone used a Genie lift?

I don't think I moved the Genie once I had it in position - just moved the beam on the forks. By the way, I don't think supporting the front of the Genie on an old door is necessarily recommended

    Anyone used a Genie lift?

During the construction of my extension I designed a flitch beam. When the steel plate arrived (104kG) two of us carried it into the garden from the road. I fitted the timber to each side and it was up at 150kG. After two of us managed to lift it up onto trestles at hip height I decided to get a...

    Soldier bricks and new opening

I wouldn't advise relying on a new timber frame to support the soldier course. I had a similar issue when I built my own extension, although I installed an aluminium bifold in the one opening and nothing in the other. I installed three layers of Helifix bar and resin to form a beam, the top...

    Energy Cap

I guess the issue with that is that the panels would be in shade for large parts of the day. South facing is obviously best in that respect. I've also wondered whether, with a bit of knowledge of the sun's passage through the sky, solar panels could be mounted on a rotating mechanism that also...

    Energy Cap

I keep looking on Google Earth at the huge swathes of industrial buildings with huge white roofs reflecting all that sun light. There is surely scope to use those roofs for solar energy. Obviously I realise that there are structural implications to installing solar panels on industrial...

And nurses have been getting 1% pay rises for practically that entire time, so in real terms their salaries are now massively lower than they were in 2010. And people wonder why British people don't want to spend three years at University and rack up a whole load of debt to become a nurse.

Well, the average per selected companies above is £62344. But we'd need more information to work out the average per driver (number of drivers per franchise), so the average per driver could be more or less than the £62344 above.

I don't think the closure of the mines was the issue per se. Who wouldn't pay for a cheaper product from elsewhere if it does the job equally as well as what can be produced in this country? The bigger issue was the fact that the mines were closed with very little consideration to the negative...

Plus, of course, they aren’t paid for the complexity of pushing a lever, they are paid for the unsociable hours and the responsibility of getting thousands of people safely to their destinations every day, which involves having to stay alert at all times for any changes in signalling or...

Classic case of deliberately inferring your own biases, or ignoring the actual point I was making, in order to make a point of your own : i.e. that British employees are lazy good for nothings who are always on the make for themselves at the expense of - and this is always the case - “me...

Absolutely right. I get what you're saying. Financial centres have higher productivity not because the employees work harder, but because they are able to generate more income per hour worked. That's why it's better in some ways to compare such metrics as the number of units produced per...

    Liz Truss Said

Productivity is affected by so many factors aside from the one Liz Truss herself was heard to suggest - that workers in this country are lazy. Some other reasons: Poor working conditions Lack of investment in tools, machinery, technology, software, training Lack of options for progression...

Wall (Main + Extension) not lining up

Nothing you can do unless you render over the whole lot. Wouldn't recommend trying to grind them flush o_O

Productivity and margin are not the same thing though. Productivity is related to how much is produced per person, whereas margin is related to how much profit should be made per item produced. Obviously if productivity reduces, so does the margin, but whether a particular sector is high or low...

Wall (Main + Extension) not lining up

Looks like the extension has been built at a slight angle from the original building. There may be a good reason for this such as maintaining access to the side of the property. The fascia also appears to be butt jointed at this location. It shouldn't be a problem.
