    Isolation valves for plate exchanger

Does anyone know where to get isolation valves to connect a plate exchanger? I was thinking a valve like those used for circulation pumps, but smaller, as the plate exchangers have 3/4" connections, and the circulation pumps are mostly 1-1/2".

    Thermal store advice

I am looking to install a thermal store to replace my current vented cylinder. My current boiler is also vented, so I guess I would need a stainless or copper cylinder. All of the ones I have found seem to have quite small heat exchangers for the the hot water, so I am thinking to use an...

    Recommendations for thermal store?

An unvented cylinder is fine for DHW, but unless you put a buffer on the heating side you get poor control over the radiators which are constantly heating up/cooling off as the thermostat cuts in and out. Also boiler cycling. With a thermal store you can keep the rads at an even temperature with...

    Recommendations for thermal store?

This store can be had for just over £600 with insulation and it can be had with a whopping 6.3sq m stainless DHW exchanger, although it is mild steel, so it would need to be on a sealed system. https://buffer-tank.co.uk/lmt-buffer-tank.php Has anyone any experience with this company?

    Recommendations for thermal store?

One reason for this is that the DHW heat exchangers are too small. I had a thermal store in a previous house and I used to run it at 60C. It was 300l, and had a DHW exchanger size of 4.1 sq m. Most are less than half that size. It also depends a bit on your boiler size. You can use a larger...

    Recommendations for thermal store?

I was just going to use a gas boiler. All the cylinders I can find with a decent sized coil (> 3 sq m) are made from mild steel. I may have to go plate exchanger route, even though it is more complex. It seems it is difficult to find a G3 plumber just to commission the tank. (I am in Norwich).

    Recommendations for thermal store?

I have read that you need G3 if it is a sealed system, although there seems to be some debate about that.

    Recommendations for thermal store?

I am looking for a thermal store. Preferably a 300l stainless tank with one large DHW coil (~4 sq m). I would like something like this: http://plumbingsupplies24.co.uk/hygienic-buffer-storage-tank-vertical/ but it is a mild steel tank. I don't think I can find a G3 to commission it for me, so...

Good bad and the ugly Plumbing

Those are indeed very nice and clean looking joints. I never thought about it much, I am super picky about the system design, pipe layout, having lots of shutoffs and drain valves and so on, but I really never thought to try to make the soldering look better. Which I suppose is a bit odd...

Good bad and the ugly Plumbing

Yeah, the pic was taken a bit before commissioning, you can also see an electrical box hanging above the store.

Good bad and the ugly Plumbing

Looks nice, but I think I prefer the thermal store, less to go wrong.

You know us DIY types, we have to make sure the joints are completely full.

Vented Thermal Store with 3 plate exchangers

Thanks for that, it looks like a nice setup, and not so far from what I would like to do.

How to control primary flow rate of plate exchanger based on DHW demand

That sounds like it should work as well, although I don't think you would need the bypass. If the valve closes that is fine. As soon as the remote sensor drops in temperature, the valve would open up and the pump would increase speed. The sensor would be on the output of the DHW side. It could...

Vented Thermal Store with 3 plate exchangers

Thanks. Can you buy the Torrent without all that stuff hanging off the side? (exchanger, pump, controls, etc). I would like to fit my own exchanger and controls. I plan to run the tank at 60C and the exchangers provided will likely be too small. Plus I would like to use off the shelf standard...

How to control primary flow rate of plate exchanger based on DHW demand

I would set the store a bit lower than that, say 60C, which is what I run mine at. Most people run hotter because their exchangers are too small, mine is 4.1 square meters surface area, so 60C works fine. I am guessing one could set the thermal valve around 40C. When the tap is opened cold water...

What type of pipe stat do I need to control secondary circulation pump

Another possibility if you had a thermal store, might be to locate plate exchangers close to the points of use, and keep them "warm" by using a pressure modulating smartpump and thermal balancing valves on the returns of the primaries close to the exchangers. Disclaimer: I said might. I am not...

How to control primary flow rate of plate exchanger based on DHW demand

The idea is to leave the pump on all the time, and get it to reduce its output when the valve closes. Having the pump on all the time reduces the amount of control elements required (less to go wrong) and modulating the pump should reduce the flow so it doesn’t destroy the stratification (and...

Vented Thermal Store with 3 plate exchangers

Thanks, that is good to know. Would you have any recommendations for a specific tank? For vented it needs to be stainless, I would like around 300 litres and no coils, but a lot of decent size (i.e. at least 1 inch) connectors.
