    PIR

Peronally, I reckon that 16mm T&E is to blame for your Zs. majority of 16mm T&E's have a 6mm CPC , some even have a 4mm CPC. as Zs= Ze+ R1+R2 , then obviosuly a smaller CPC will have a higher resistance, hence a higher Zs reading. Why can't you run a 16mm CPC from CU to the MET ...

    Floodlights keep tripping MCB

Ditto. Thats why I suggested using a 5A Switched Fused Spur in my previous post! I did'nt suggest the HRC carrier as it was not specified what consumer unit the person had , other that Wylex. I'm assuming its one of the newer NH type (which use NB MCB's). As far as I am aware I think...

    Floodlights keep tripping MCB

Why not replace the 6A B Type mcb in the consumer unit with a 10A B Type mcb , as this will cover the 1.5mm cable , then replace your light switch (to the floodlights) with a switched fused spur and put a 5A fuse in there - this should cover you for start up current due to its slower operating...

Running a current through garage door handle?

Why not fit a decent security system , and inside the garage use a Klaxon Master Blaster Siren with it. They cost about £100 trade. I tell you, once they get in there, they won't hang around - its so loud, you can't bear to be near it ! Just hide it so they cant find it, or put it so high...

    Cowboy buidling disaster

Definitely for a start, they need to be traced and terminated properly. If you have the correct metering tools, this should not be a problem. Your lights will most prob be on 1mm anywhay, so thats another 2 cables identified (loop in & loop out !!!) , and theres probably the light switches...

    1.5mm cable for sockets?

No! You may only use it if you feed the cable via a fused spur with a 13A fuse inserted before going on to the new socket. This protects the downsizing of cable as you suggest with regard to current carrying capacity. For what it costs to buy the fused spur and associated patress/box ...

    Connecting up new CU

tut tut. Surely you would have covered this if you had followed the correct sequence of C&G exams, eg 2330, 2381 , 2391. What you are asking with reference to extending the ring is one of the most basicest of basic electrical tasks. As to the cable lengths , Butt crimps are used (if inside...

    shower rcd test

If you have a tester that plugs in for sockets , then just get a new lead for the tester that has live& neutral probes and an earth clip. Then just remove the shower lid and hook them up at the shower connector terminals and do your testing from there. Failing that, you could always test...

    30 ma rcd time delay

Fireman, your trouble is too much earth leakage on the rcd consumer unit!! Bear in mind anything with filters (eg PC's , monitors, switch mode power supplies etc) will have high leakage currents to earth. A typical amusement machine may have as much as 1mA leakage. If they have say, 30...

    World Cup

I know 1966 was the last world cup that England won . As far as I know, England have only ever won it once, just for the record! Although I stand to be corrected. Can we end this topic?? Its got naff all to do with this forum!! Only thing that could be related is if England get to Final...

    Bang!!!

DON'T FORGET TO PICK UP SOME EARTH SLEEVING!!!!!

    Bang!!!

That bare earth wire wont help it either!! While you have the fan down, get some earth sleeving from your local diy store and slip it over it! This could easy cause a short to live or neutral In fact, the neutral going into the block looks like the bare conductor is exposed. If this is the...

    Power cable for outdoor

Is this a new build pool or an old pool?? In retrospect, if its an old pool, does it already have a heater installed?? Need to know more info before any advice being given. If it's new build, surely it would need notification to the council, in which case they will ask for electrical work...

    big spur

Ever heard of an RCD and Methods of Shock Protection / disconnection times etc ???Water and Electricity do not mix!! I suggest you get somebody to help you out with this one , because it is NOT as simple as tagging wires off wherever you like - if you are adding to your ring etc you need to...

    Dodgy Kitchen 'ring'

Even still, a 40A breaker for a 4mm cable is still not on!! The cable is only rated at, what 32 Amps (without any correction factors!!) , so if you get 40 Amps of current going down it (which would be possible if somebody replaced the gas cooker with an electric one) - theres a high chance of...

    Installing satellite

I hooked one up a couple of years ago, its still up there in fact. Its an 80cm dish with offset LNB's. Each different satellite broadcasts about 200 free channels and another 200 encrypted ones, plus radio channels etc. Popular Satellites are Astra 19.2 degrees East (The old Sky satellite...

Simple. Oddjob has it wired to a RCA phono plug!! Hope it not a gold plated one !!!! Remind me not to lend him my CD Player. <disclaimer: i realise Odd Job meant RCD, just having some fun> Out of interest , I VUT my finger the other day!!

Diff Phase Circuits _ How far apart

It is in the 16th regs, I stumbled across it the other day, it was near to the section which describes high CPC currents whereby you needed the cream cloured sticker to display the prescence of those High CPC currents. Could be near the end of Section 6, when I get 5 mins, will point it out...

    Huge Garden Power

Why not knock up a weatherproof enclosure in some sort of weatherproof location (ie a very very small shed ) with a 4 way consumer & rcd , put this at the very centre of the garden , run a 40,50 or 60A sub-main to this via large SWA & switchfuse/mcb etc , then take 4 x 16Amp radials out to...

Diff Phase Circuits _ How far apart

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think its either 2 or 2.5 metres. You can have accessories on different phases within that distance , but you have to display the 400v warning on both accessories. Although it's not ideally practiceable to put them as close as that, afer all, two lives (on...
