Thanks for the replies. The installers have agreed to grind the back of the tiles. They said that it is not necessary, but they will do it to keep me happy.

The installers have advised that a maximum of a 5 mm gap is permitted according to MCS guidelines. It's a bit difficult to check the gaps. Also removing, grinding and replacing the tiles might weaken them.
