Acer Extensa 2540-5140 Laptop RAM Upgrade

Make sure you're using a 64bit OS, otherwise anything over 4GB will be inaccessible. Your laptop is running the DDR3L, L for low voltage, and won't be compatible with 1.5V sticks, so look for 1.35V DDR3.

    Low clearance decking over patio

The previous owners of our house repaved over the top of existing concrete "council" slabs with a York stone look paver. Looks great, just be careful not to go higher than your DPC

    Low clearance decking over patio

Weed proof membrane would be belt and braces yes, but lack of light through deck would keep most weeds at bay. I've used thin strips of roofing felt under joists before to keep the beams from getting damp. Personally, I wouldn't go back to a deck again, much prefer slabs

    Insulating a shed

Hi, I'm considering buying a garden room/big shed to work from home, I don't plan to use it mid-Winter, but don't want it to get damp inside either. Should I I insulate roof, walls and floor, or part of please? Cheers, Tony

    What hard drive / tower

yeah, best use a tiny SSD for operating system, and then a second SATA HDD for storage perhaps, replicating to a USB external HDD through something like Microsoft's free SyncToy app. Like Eta said, go with a cheap desktop unit from JL or Currys, you could go cheaper than Eta's suggestion, all...

    What hard drive / tower

Hi, i've just taken a second-hand PC from Ebay with an i3-3100 and 4Gb of RAM, installed Linux Mint and it's as fast as the i3 8th gen i'm typing this on. If you want to go second-hand route, i can help look through a few ads if you like? The machine i bought was 7 miles away, so picked it up...

    PC Troubles

That's ransomware at work. They are encrypted, which requires a password from the hacker to unlock. Best to revert to backup of the data and delete the encrypted files

    Microsoft Edge blurry text

That review is just one opinion. Agree with IT Minion, chrome is the defacto browser IMO too.

    Your opinion please

Looks ok, if you find it too slow with Win10, installing Linux Mint for free is easy.

    Splice PoE cable

Hi, connectors on our CCTV were not as sealed as I hoped, and the Ethernet terminals have rusted. I'm trying to spkice the cables together, but on realising that this is a power over Ethernet (PoE) system, just wondering whether I can splice either of the two red and two black cables together...

    Gaming computer

each BIOS can behave differently, the moment the BIOS screen (F2, F7 and F10 options) disappear, you might want to try holding F8 then, as that's when BIOS passes control to Windows. Does the system have a recovery CD? if so, go into those BIOS settings, choose boot order, and set CD as the...

    Laptop keeps switching off.

Hi Conny, is it completely going dead, or is it perhaps just the screen? I would agree with you, sounds like a weak solder joint in the power feed from either battery or mains. If so, would probably need a new main board, which would cost as much as a new laptop, unless you're lucky enough to...
