Hard wood double glazing + glazed units

window glass does not need to be toughened (safety) so kitemark/bs not ness unless over a specific size. K glass is by special order only and you have to specify it at time of ordering, I think it's about 20% dearer. If you dont know, K glass has nothing to do with strength, just heat loss...

    uPVC Doors

since the thickness of the upvc will only be about 4mm if your lucky I wouldn't try it. However, look at the hinges. See if there is a little plastic cap on them either on the side or top. You should be able to lift the door up about 5mm via the hinges. They usually have a screw adjustment. Woody

    Soffits..

Waynes. From personal experience it is nigh on impossible to get a surveyor to admit they made a mistake or missed something. However, there wouldn't be any harm in phoning one of the partners of the company, explaining you feel they should have picked up on it and asking if they would...

laying hardwood over OSB over concrete

For hardwood, I would just use a good quality faom underlay, then place the beech on that. This will create anice floting floor. woody

damp floor due to subsidence. Any quick fix?

I really won't comment on the subsidence, as it's years since I dealt with that side of things. The salt like substance is exactly that. It will be salt from either the plaster or cement/concrete and will indeed be caused by damp/water. This certainly needs serious investigation and I would...

    Soffits..

ex council, buily 1950's VERY good chance it's asbestos. Unless you paid for a full structural survey, no the surveyor wouldn't have commented unless he had cause to. You've got a couple of choices. Prime over it then paint it leaving it all in place. Rub off the loose paint first BUT YOU...

    Damn Floorboards

most solvent cleaners use an acetone base especially those designed for pvu-c. This will not remove certain glues - but you may get lucky. Whte spirit is another alternative to try. PLEASE REMEMBER that NEARLY ALL solvent based removers are VERY HIGHLY FLAMMABLE and you need to remeber your...

    mitre saw stand

Hi Thermo. Depends mate on just what you're doing. The one I have (Makita) is a pain in the butt. You have to bolt the saw on to make it stable It is heavy and large to lug about, and to be honest I never use it. I just put the saw on the floor and put a board along side it to support the...

    Soffits..

If it were me, I would don a face mask and goggles, then gently scrape a little of the flaking paint off and take a look. If it is Greyish/whitish and looks like compressed cement, then it is a good chance it may be an asbestos based substance. (How old is you house, that may also be a clue)...

    Cutting large boards

Thermo, I wish the merchants around here would flipping cut timber  JCT, I use a circular saw with home made straight edge. You do need as Bigall has said, to ensure you're blade is good. Also, when cutting, support the offcut so it doesn't drop a bit and if need be just put a little...

Fitting a dado rail, can I do it myself?

Lucy, why not ask a couple of local chippies to give you an estimate first? Make your situatiuon regarding your finaces clear. You may be surprised. It the wall is curved that may be very tricky and sometimes wood is better than MDF. Surprisingly, around here, real wood dado rail is...

    New Fitted Kitchen

Hi, that really is not as easy to answer as you may think. sorry. It will firstly depend on where you get your units, what quality they are, how many and of what style. If you want cornice, pelmets etc thats more. You will need an electrician nowadays (due to a regulation called part 'P')...

Fixing tallish piece of wood to concrete

Your choices are almost limitless due to lack of weight. AS Les has said you could build a ply box. Or you can get some 2x2 attach that around the base in a square then screw that to the floor. Glue (PU) and screw a wooden block to the floor as you have suggested and fix to that. It really does...

    Front Door Letting in Draughts

Hi brox. The problem with ANY wood door is natural movement that can and will create draughts almost no matter what you do. That said, obviously the better the door the less movement and draughts you will get. Trade suppliers such as Howdens do a range of good quality hardwood doors for...
