    Restoring an oldish deck

I'm no expert. If it's stained, then I would think you'd need to remove the layer of stained wood, rather than use a product to remove the stain, so maybe a wire brush on a drill? I wonder if another option, rather than trying to remove all of it, would be to stain it with a darker colour - not...

    Another raised bed question

It's worth bearing in mind that the sleepers won't last a very long time, but you'll get a few years out of them, especially if you line the inside with old compost sacks or other plastic. Is that the wall of a building or a garden wall? (Makes a difference to whether or not you need to keep it...

    Shorten chain?

Or just do it the easy way: Enclose the chain in a localised temporal gravity freeze field, and keep it there until the expansion of the rest of the universe gets to the point when the chain length is at the (relatively) short length you require.

Tariffs with solar and battery, this time of year hardly matters, but what about winter?

Ah, yes that's quite a different proposition - the batteries are mainly filling in gaps I see, and my thinking about it might be quite wide of the mark ..

Tariffs with solar and battery, this time of year hardly matters, but what about winter?

Sorry, I can't quite understand what you're meaning here. What's the usable capacity of the battery? - maybe that will help me understand...

Tariffs with solar and battery, this time of year hardly matters, but what about winter?

I tend to think of peak import rate as almost irrelevant - with a battery I'd never want to be importing at that time...

Tariffs with solar and battery, this time of year hardly matters, but what about winter?

Yes, there is a tradeoff between financial advantage and the amount of time playing with the system! It's worth having a look at how often you can change the tariffs you're interested in using with Octopus. Some people stick with Flux or Go, some people do change tariffs twice a year -...

    Devices to meter kWh

Just for clarity - by 'true usage' do you mean: 'the amount of energy that is consumed by appliances within the house, excluding the energy used by the solar and battery appliances' I guess one could make the argument that the energy used by the solar and battery appliances are actually part...

    Devices to meter kWh

Maybe a spreadsheet to assess the (fluctuating daily) hourly pay rate you receive in savings made per time spent on calculating and recording it would be useful? ;-) More seriously, if you're interested in payback, and have solar and battery, surely you're on T.O.U. tariffs for import and export?
