    LPG or Oil

I was in the same situation a year or so ago regarding oil or LPG. Oil works out cheaper and you aren't "tied in" with a supplier. Tank wise, I'd advise to go for a metal tank. Plastic ones are known to split over time.

Oil Boiler or Solid Fuel Boiler? What would you do?

Another update. Gas is completely off the cards now as another ridiculous price has come back from one of the utility installers. Anyway, after many calculations and much head scratching, we are going to stick with the oil boiler, but also connect a multi fuel boiler stove to also heat the...

Oil Boiler or Solid Fuel Boiler? What would you do?

That is something definitely to consider then. Just a quick update anyway. Been on the phone to National Grid this morning. They want an up front quotation fee of just under £500 before they even do anything. They can't give an indicative price either. Catch 22 comes to mind...

Oil Boiler or Solid Fuel Boiler? What would you do?

Norcon, sounds a good set up if you aren't having to buy any oil! How many rads does that heat? And what's the heat output? Don't think they do a stove big enough for our needs (around 40kW). The Polish boiler isn't the "WBS Burnit Boiler" is it?

Oil Boiler or Solid Fuel Boiler? What would you do?

I'll get on the phone to NGT tomorrow then Tony. Thanks a lot for your help (and corgi's). I'll keep this thread updated as and when I hear anything. Thanks again.

Oil Boiler or Solid Fuel Boiler? What would you do?

Thanks for the replies chaps. There is a lot to consider. The first house on the lane has mains gas (they are basically on the junction of the lane and main road). The next house along, which is my nextdoor neighbour doesn't. They are very unlikely to want gas, as they are elderly and...

Oil Boiler or Solid Fuel Boiler? What would you do?

Thanks for the reply Corgi. Really don't want to use pellets as they are too expensive. We'd rather use our own seasoned wood as it's free fuel. I didn't realise about the coal, so thanks for pointing that out. Will add that to my list of questions to the boiler manufacturers.

Oil Boiler or Solid Fuel Boiler? What would you do?

Agile - looks like I edited my reply at the same time you responded. There are two properties along the public lane before you get to ours. However, there is a 1m wide grass verge on each side of the lane, which I assume is publically owned.

Oil Boiler or Solid Fuel Boiler? What would you do?

Should I have contacted National Grid directly? The mains gas runs along the main road, which is at the bottom of the lane we live on. We are around 100 yards up the lane.

Oil Boiler or Solid Fuel Boiler? What would you do?

We currently have a Grant oil boiler (around 2 years old, which we bought last year secondhand for next to nowt). It runs around 12 double rads and a bathroom via an indirect cylinder. We currently have one large stove, one small stove and an open fire. Current total floor area over both...

Extension's DPC abutting existing building question

Sorted it "ish". Basically as per my last post. The DPM will be cut into the existing wall where there are no knock throughs. Not 100% sure how deep into the wall though. Just hope this doesn't cause any damp problems in the existing rooms that go along this wall...

Extension's DPC abutting existing building question

The extension runs the length of the house and will be separated by the existing rear wall. There will be two "knock throughs" where two doors are going to be, one at either end of the extension to access the existing house. The section is actually through one of the door ways, so will it...

Extension's DPC abutting existing building question

Just going over the drawings for our extension and I've come across an element/detail I'm not 100% sure of. The existing building has no dpc or dpm (built circa. 1700), but obviously the extension will have. The detail on the drawing states that the dpm is to be taken under the existing slab...

Asphalt Floor - to screed or to plywood?

Thanks Dazlight; Will get some ordered! Next question...Glue or Float the engineered board?

Asphalt Floor - to screed or to plywood?

We want to lay engineered oak flooring to our ground floor, however, the substructure is lined with asphalt (done in the 70's or 80's). The asphalt has areas of hollows and lumps and ideally we want to level this out. So my question is: Should I ply line it with 6mm (or 9mm or 12mm)...

Anyone Converted a Church/Chapel/Parish Hall into a Dwelling

Haha...it's a few meters away from the Cemetry itself, so should be alright! This one isn't Listed either, which I think will help me a great deal... Are there any items that I should particularly worry about...?...Or am I right in saying it's typically like buying a house that is in need...

Anyone Converted a Church/Chapel/Parish Hall into a Dwelling

Hi My first post, so please go steady...(not sure if I have posted this into the right section?) As title, has anyone (themselves personally, friends/family) ever converted a Church/Chapel/Parish Hall or similair into a dwelling? Just looking for any costings/experiences/hassles/advice...
