    undercoating before black gloss......

That's a new one on me too. I think I'd prefer to stick to dark grey in any case - black could be prone to causing missed spots.

    Painting old gloss painted staircase

Nylon sanding pads make life much easier when used on spindles - something like those in the link below, in the suitable grade for you requirements, which are available in many places, including Halfords. https://www.restexpress.co.uk/acatalog/3M_Scotch-Brite_Nylon_Abrasive_Hand_Pads.html You...

Paint finish on walls & ceiling - same or different?

Spot on, although that doesn't mean you have to use Diamond Matt on the ceiling - a decent vinyl matt or even contract matt can be used. If you have textured ceilings, then silk is more forgiving, but silk on a flat ceiling is a bad choice, unless it is perfectly flat and you are a good enough...

forgot to use the knotting solution

You could sand back to reveal the knots and then block them with the knotting solution. From my experiences of trying to use knotting over a primer, it isn't as successful as putting it on the bare knots. Zinsser B-I-N can be used on top of the primer and will probably be the best for blocking...

protecting hinges and door furniture whilst painting

Remove door handles, latches and strike plates. It's far easier in the long run, guarantees no paint seepage, and provides a professional result. Painting around handles leaves a ridge in the paint which can be noticeable further down the line, and can be tricky to try and hide, if you ever want...

Paste the paper/wall. What's the difference??

'Paste the wall' papers are non-woven. This means that they don't expand when wet, so you don't need to allow them to soak before hanging. This allows you to paste the wall and then hang the paper directly from the roll without worry. That said, because they don't expand, you can also paste the...

Paint brush for ogee skirting and architraves

Water based paints need a good quality synthetic brush, slightly dampening the bristles with water before applying any paint. Oil based paints can also be used with a synthetic bristle brush, although I have always preferred natural/china bristle brushes to achieve the best finish. Avoid natural...

    Crack In plaster

Out of interest, was there originally some kind of cupboard under the stairs that has been removed at some point? I've seen this happen in a few houses where some framing, not really considered as structural, is removed from under the stairs. This can lead to a lot of movement in the stair...

To PVA or not to PVA

No. Gardz iz an acrylic resin which does not contain PVA. On the subject of PVA, it is not strictly the PVA that we use as an adhesive/sealer that is used in vinyl/latex paints. In most instances, PVA - Poly(vinyl acetate) is used, but first has to be combined with Poly(vinyl alcohol) to...
