What are these old plumbers tools ?

The round wood on a rope is bobbins for putting inside lead pipe so it wouldn't collapse when bending it. The semi circle device looks like pipe clamps for sweating a joint on lead water pipes. awl for cutting holes in pipes to make a branch. The scribe could be for marking lead for cuts for...

    AOSMITH or Lochinvar

A O Smith for me, most important thing is to make sure the anodes are changed regularly if not the cylinder will rot through also the turbulator has to be checked too so flue has to be detachable. Generally very reliable and can give years of service.

    Back Bolier upgrade

Is the back boiler gas or solid fuel? If gas and you only have one tank in the loft it is probably a primatic cylinder. If solid fuel it will be a long hot water recovery as you are relying on the fire.

problems with rayburn royal 1979 with original oil burner

There is a level indicator on the side of the float valve, this should be just above the centre base plate on the pot, about 1/8 of an inch when oil levels across. If there is not enough oil in the pot it will burn to low and coke up and reduce flow even more so stopping heating up and going...

problems with rayburn royal 1979 with original oil burner

Control box outside? If it the one with the electric head it shouldn't be outside. Float valves don't generally smell .If drip test ok could be to do with levels of valve to pot also oil has less sulphur in it now and am finding Ryaburns or Aga's that ran all year are having to be serviced more...

    reasons for a sooty exhaust

Grant pcb causes motor to run slower than normal therefore not enough air so it soots up. But that would be the last thing to look at, get a service done and that should sort it.

    reasons for a sooty exhaust

Year old? it needs a service and set up with pressure gauge and flue gas analyser plus a nozzle. Could be a fault on the boiler electrics as there was a fault with these a while back where the fan would run slow so would soot up caused by faulty PCB.
